Senior Indirect Fuel Tax Accountant

Role Description Join our team as a Sr. Fuel Tax Accountant, where you’ll play a key role in keeping our organization compliant and financially strong. In this collaborative role, you’ll manage state and local fuel tax filings, partner with cross-functional teams, support audits, and help shape smart tax strategies in a fast-paced, supportive environment. - Salary range: $50k - $69k based on experience Responsibilities - Prepare, review and file monthly, quarterly and annual fuel tax filings in compliance with multiple regulatory agencies - Analyze state and local fuel tax laws, advise on new product/service taxability, and support effective tax strategies - Assist with fuel audit requests, gather documentation, and coordination - Research and communicate issues to store accounting, fuel accounting and help desk to ensure accurate collection and accounting for fuel tax accruals and related ledger activity - Responsible for general ledger entries and reconciliations of assigned fuel tax liabilities in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and practices - Communicate frequently with management team, field operations, Regulatory Agencies, vendors, suppliers and other necessary outside organizations in respect to assigned areas - Conform and adhere to internal controls over fuel tax accounting procedures as set forth by upper management - Interfaces frequently with various levels within the organization Qualifications - Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Finance - Minimum of 1 year US fuel tax experience - Proficient in the utilization of Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, and Outlook) - Advanced Excel skills (i.e. v-lookups, sumifs, pivot tables) - Ability to multi-task and complete projects within specific deadlines - Strong computer, presentation and organizational skills - Excellent oral and written communication skills - Strong analytical and problem-solving skills - Detail oriented with excellent time management skills Benefits - This is not an exhaustive list of all job duties and requirements and may change based on business necessities. Role Description Block's Product Accounting team sits within the broader Finance organization and is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of revenue recognition across Block's product lines. This team partners closely with F&S, Operations, and other sub-Accounting teams to deliver a complete picture of hardware financial performance — from the top line down to gross margin. As our Senior Revenue Accountant, you will be the subject matter expert on hardware revenue, owning the full recognition lifecycle under ASC 606 while also contributing to cost accounting processes that drive visibility into hardware margin — directly influencing how leadership understands and acts on the performance of our hardware business. - Own end-to-end revenue recognition for hardware product lines in accordance with ASC 606, operating with a high degree of independence. - Review and interpret customer contracts to identify performance obligations, transaction prices, and appropriate recognition timing. - Prepare and record monthly revenue journal entries, deferred revenue schedules, and related balance sheet reconciliations. - Partner and work with the Cost Accounting team to track COGS and hardware margins, ensuring accurate cost-to-revenue matching and supporting gross margin reporting. - Analyze hardware gross margin trends and deliver clear, well-supported variance explanations to F&S. - Drive month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities for hardware revenue and related cost areas with a focus on accuracy and timeliness. - Collaborate with Sales, Deal Desk, and Legal to review non-standard arrangements and assess revenue accounting impact. - Prepare audit schedules and serve as a point of contact for external auditor inquiries related to hardware revenue and cost. - Proactively identify and lead process improvement initiatives to enhance the efficiency, accuracy, and scalability of the revenue close cycle. - Support system enhancements and implementations related to revenue or cost accounting tools.
