Role Description Avalara is accelerating delivery of AI-enabled capabilities across our compliance platform to improve customer experience, increase engineering velocity, and scale global operations. As a Senior Software Engineer, you will build reliable, scalable systems that support global transaction growth and help teams use artificial intelligence in practical, secure, and measurable ways. You will work with engineering, product, and business teams to deliver backend and frontend capabilities that improve automation, data processing, and customer insight. In this role you will be expected to raise engineering standards through ownership, technical judgment, mentoring, and responsible use of AI. You will report to the Senior Manager of Software Engineering, and you will work remotely, anywhere in Brazil. Responsibilities - Build scalable, secure, and high-performing backend and frontend systems for Avalara’s global compliance platform. - Design and operate distributed systems, application programming interfaces, and cloud-based services. - Use AI-assisted development, testing, documentation, and technical exploration to improve engineering velocity and quality. - Contribute to AI-enabled product capabilities that improve automation, data processing, and customer-facing intelligence. - Improve deployment frequency, code quality, and automated test coverage through continuous integration and delivery practices. - Strengthen system reliability and observability through thoughtful architecture, monitoring, and proactive issue prevention. - Lead technical design discussions and influence architecture for complex systems. - Collaborate with global engineering, product, and business stakeholders in English. - Mentor engineers, provide peer feedback, and raise engineering standards. Qualifications - 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with hands-on experience building scalable services using .NET and C#. - Experience designing and operating distributed systems, RESTful and/or GraphQL application programming interfaces, and production systems in AWS. - Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform, continuous integration and delivery pipelines such as GitLab, Docker, Kubernetes, and relational and/or NoSQL databases. - Strong knowledge of automated testing strategies, code quality practices, observability, and production reliability. - Demonstrated use of artificial intelligence to improve measurable engineering or outcomes, such as cycle time, automation, quality, or deployment efficiency. - Strong English communication skills and the judgment to evaluate AI-generated outputs, apply AI responsibly and securely, mentor peers, and leave systems and practices stronger than you found them.
