Who we are Samsara (NYSE: IOT) is the pioneer of the Connected Operations™ Cloud, which is a platform that enables organizations that depend on physical operations to harness Internet of Things (IoT) data to develop actionable insights and improve their operations. At Samsara, we are helping improve the safety, efficiency and sustainability of the physical operations that power our global economy. Representing more than 40% of global GDP, these industries are the infrastructure of our planet, including agriculture, construction, field services, transportation, and manufacturing — and we are excited to help digitally transform their operations at scale. Working at Samsara means you’ll help define the future of physical operations and be on a team that’s shaping an exciting array of product solutions, including Video-Based Safety, Vehicle Telematics, Apps and Driver Workflows, and Equipment Monitoring. As part of a recently public company, you’ll have the autonomy and support to make an impact as we build for the long term. About the role The In-Vehicle Experience team at Samsara built its foundation at the edge: six firmware engineers shipping the software that runs on dash cams in hundreds of thousands of vehicles. Now the roadmap is expanding into AI-powered voice agents, real-time audio orchestration, and driver feedback systems, and the team is standing up its software engineering function for the first time. You'd be the first dedicated SWE and the team's technical anchor from day one. The problem space is unusual: a truck cab where a driver's attention is limited, multiple AI-driven systems are competing to speak, and every decision has to be right the first time. Today, these products don't exist yet. You'll define what to build, design the systems behind it, and ship it. The starting point is always the driver's experience. You'll work primarily in backend systems that orchestrate agentic, voice, and real-time experiences running at the edge. The team's firmware engineers own the device side. You'll need to understand edge constraints well enough to design APIs and service contracts they can consume, but this is a backend and AI role. AI-assisted engineering is central to how you'll work. You'll use tools like Codex, Claude Code, and Cursor throughout the development lifecycle: investigation, design, code generation, testing, review, and operations. This is a remote position open to candidates residing in the US. In this role, you will: - Define what to build and how to build it, shaping product direction from the engineering side - Own the technical direction for orchestrating concurrent, real-time interactions to deliver one coherent experience for the driver - Build and ship new AI-powered products from zero to one in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment - Design systems that coordinate across backend and edge boundaries, where reliability and real-time responsiveness both matter - Make architectural tradeoffs where requirements are still evolving, favoring foundations that generalize over narrowly-scoped solutions - Establish patterns for reliability, observability, and explainability in systems that make real-time decisions - Serve as the team's technical anchor: review designs, unblock decisions, and mentor firmware engineers as they grow into full-stack contributors - Bring in outside ideas and practices for full-stack and AI-assisted development - Champion the Samsara cultural principles (Focus on Customer Success, Build for the Long Term, Adopt a Growth Mindset, Be Inclusive, Win as a Team) as we scale globally Minimum requirements for the role: - 8+ years of software engineering experience, including ownership of products from concept through production - Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience - Strong programming fundamentals (Golang, Python, or similar) - Experience building products on top of LLMs or AI agent platforms - Experience designing reliable, distributed backend systems that support multi-step, asynchronous workflows - Experience designing backend systems that serve edge, embedded, or resource-constrained clients - Experience with quality and safety considerations for AI-driven systems: validating outputs, structured responses, retries/fallbacks, and monitoring - Experience mentoring engineers as they expand into unfamiliar technical domains - Strong communication skills and ability to influence technical direction without formal authority - Located in and authorized to work in the United States or Canada (fully remote) An ideal candidate also has: - Experience building zero-to-one products in fast-moving, high-autonomy environments - Experience building scheduling or arbitration systems - Experience designing systems that combine structured and open-ended signal collection to inform product decisions - Familiarity with agent orchestration frameworks or patterns The range of annual base salary for full-time employees for this position is below. Please note that base pay offered may vary depending on factors including your city of residence, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. This role is also eligible for an initial RSU grant with no vesting cliff, and ongoing refresh opportunities tied to performance, subject to plan terms and conditions. Learn more about our total rewards and benefits below. Annual Base Salary $154,700—$260,000 USD Total Rewards At Samsara, we build for the people who keep the global economy moving. We want owners, not passengers, which is why our rewards are designed to fuel high-impact builders. Our compensation program delivers above-market total compensation through a combination of base salary, performance-based bonus/variable pay, and equity (for eligible roles) in a high-growth public company. We meaningfully differentiate pay for our top performers, who have the opportunity to earn above-market compensation that can outpace the broader market over time. Beyond compensation, we provide the foundations that enable long-term success: a flexible, employee-led remote model, a professional development stipend, comprehensive health and parental leave plans, and more. If you’re ready to build for the long term and own the outcome, your journey starts here. Flexible Working At Samsara, we embrace a flexible working model that caters to the diverse needs of our teams. Our offices are open for those who prefer to work in-person and we also support remote work where it aligns with our operational requirements. For certain positions, being close to one of our offices or within a specific geographic area is important to facilitate collaboration, access to resources, or alignment with our service regions. In these cases, the job description will clearly indicate any working location requirements. Our goal is to ensure that all members of our team can contribute effectively, whether they are working on-site, in a hybrid model, or fully remotely. Role Description We’re looking for a backend engineer passionate about building robust and scalable systems, excited about working with modern cloud technologies and distributed systems to power our Document Engine and SaaS products. You find satisfaction in architecting high-performance solutions, optimising system reliability, caring for the cloud infrastructure our products run on, and creating efficient backend services that handle complex document processing workflows at scale. What You'll Work On - Execute on the design and implementation of high-performance Elixir/Phoenix-based systems such as Nutrient's Document Engine and Web Services API. - Design and build declarative infrastructure, robust, scalable and easy to observe and maintain (we are currently using Terraform, Terramate and FluxCD on Kubernetes, with Helm charts powering both our managed cloud and customer self-hosted deployments). - Operate and evolve our managed cloud platform: cluster lifecycle and upgrades, GitOps workflows, observability, and database operations, keeping it reliable, secure, and cost-efficient. - Share ownership for architecture, tools and services, contribute to product development and customer success. - Collaborate closely with a small, remote-first engineering team to ship features, debug hard problems, and continuously improve reliability. - Meet in person with the team periodically to align and reflect. What You'll Bring - Experience in backend services and distributed systems. - A track record running production workloads on Kubernetes and public cloud (we use AWS), ideally with infrastructure-as-code and GitOps practices. - Strong coding skills: Elixir experience isn't required, we'll help you learn. - A pragmatic approach to code: you appreciate clean architecture but know when good enough is the right call. - A culture of direct feedback: you speak up when something isn't right and take feedback just as well. Who Thrives Here - Collaborators: You collaborate openly, listen actively, and prioritize team success over ego. - Hungry Learners: Rapid learning fuels progress and career growth. - Curious Thinkers: You dig deep to uncover the “why,” valuing understanding over simply being right. - Self-Starters: You take action without waiting for direction, turning obstacles into opportunities with creativity and persistence. - Owners: You take responsibility for solutions and outcomes, always looking for ways to improve what’s within your control. - Doers: You’re energized by progress, motivated to create meaningful impact, and eager to tackle challenges. Why You'll Love Working Here - Real platform ownership: You’ll help run and evolve the managed cloud behind Document Engine (cluster lifecycle, GitOps, and observability), not just ship services on top of it. - Modern stack end to end: Elixir and Phoenix for the product, Kubernetes with Terraform, Helm, and FluxCD for the infrastructure it runs on. - Fully remote and async-first: Minimal meetings, strong writing culture, and the independence to manage your own work. - Mission-critical product: Nutrient's platform is trusted by 15%+ of the Global 500 across 80+ countries. - Strong growth trajectory: ARR grown from $28M to $49M over the past two years, backed by Insight Partners, with a $100M+ investment fuelling further growth. - Competitive comp and an annual global retreat. Past retreats held in Croatia, Spain, and Greece.

Role Description We are looking for an experienced Full-Stack Software Engineer to design and implement the Infrastructure Services that power our GPU-as-a-Service platform. You will build the control plane that turns high-level API calls into real infrastructure actions — enrolling bare-metal servers, provisioning them, and assembling them into multi-tenant Kubernetes clusters on high-performance hardware. You will own the full lifecycle of the infrastructure-level services—from the Server and MachineType APIs down to the provisioning workflows and reconciliation loops that keep the platform's view of hardware consistent with physical reality. Key Responsibilities - Infrastructure API Design: Design, build, and maintain the versioned REST and gRPC APIs for bare-metal server lifecycle, MachineType definitions, and cluster CRUD operations. - Provisioning & Workflow Development: Develop the asynchronous workflows that drive server enrollment, inspection, OS provisioning, and cluster bring-up, exposing durable status to callers. - Implementation: Implement and maintain the consoles and interfaces that visualize hardware inventory, provisioning progress, and cluster health. - System Reliability: Design the error-handling models, idempotency guarantees, and reconciliation loops necessary to manage long-running provisioning operations reliably. Qualifications - API Development: Strong experience designing RESTful APIs or gRPC services. You understand API versioning and gateway patterns. - Proficiency in Go (preferred for backend/Kubernetes ecosystem) - Kubernetes Knowledge: Deep understanding of Kubernetes primitives and controller/reconciler patterns. You will be interacting with systems like k0rdent, Metal3, and Cluster API to translate high-level API calls into infrastructure actions. - Bare-Metal Provisioning: Hands-on experience with bare-metal provisioning flows — BMC/Redfish, PXE/iPXE, image management, and hardware inspection. - Asynchronous Systems: Experience building workflow-driven or event-driven systems (e.g., Temporal) where operations are long-running and state must remain consistent across retries and failures. Preferred Qualifications - State Reconciliation: Experience building informers or reconciliation bridges that keep an external datastore consistent with Kubernetes resource state. - Multi-Tenancy: Experience building platforms where strict data and network isolation between tenants is required. - Infrastructure-as-Code: Familiarity with Terraform/OpenTofu and GitOps-driven configuration (ArgoCD or Flux). - Hardware Domain: Familiarity with GPU server hardware, DPUs/NICs, and high-performance datacenter fabrics. Benefits - Work with an established Silicon Valley leader in the cloud infrastructure industry; - Work with exceptionally passionate, talented and engaging colleagues, helping Fortune 500 and Global 2000 customers implement next-generation cloud technologies; - Be a part of cutting-edge, open-source innovation; - Thrive in the high-energy environment of a young company where openness, collaboration, risk-taking, and continuous growth are valued; - Professional development and training; - Attend conferences and working groups; - Company outings, happy hours, hackathons, and tech talks; - Receive a competitive compensation package with a strong benefits plan.
