Title: Weekend Staff Editor, Social Visuals Location: New York, NY Job Description: The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for. The New York Times is continuing to expand our presence across social media platforms. The Social Visuals team's core mission is to convey important news coverage and strong visual stories across the depth and breadth of our report. We showcase the expertise of Times journalists, share urgent news updates, and promote and elevate our most compelling stories to our growing social audiences. The team applies expert design, photo editing, art direction and social platform expertise to the visuals that lead and accompany the way our work is presented to our audiences off platform. We are looking for a creative Staff Editor to focus on visual storytelling and production on weekends. You will work on daily news, features, enterprise and investigative projects. You will bring an understanding of editorial priorities and coordinate with journalists on our visual teams. The role includes delivering news quickly, building a regular publishing cadence, experimenting with formats and optimizing workflows. You have expertise with visual journalism and storytelling, including experience writing and editing social copy, graphic design and photo editing. You have strong work samples with a deep understanding of modern digital practices and a great awareness of trends on social and emerging platforms. You are a fast learner with creative ideas and can work collaboratively. This is a Thursday-Sunday position based in New York and includes regular attendance in the office two days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance. Responsibilities: - Adapt the best of The Times' journalism for social and off-platform audiences, including bespoke design tailored from digital and print presentations. - Tell stories visually in card form with various media assets, including photo, video, graphics, illustration and graphic design. - Draft and copy edit text, including headlines, captions and narrative text on visuals. - Demonstrate excellent news judgment. - Demonstrate grasp of signals from mainstream and emerging social channels. - Collaborate with a team of social and audience editors to identify and cover breaking news, features, series, exclusives and investigative news, interpreting data and signals to know what pieces are the right fit for off-platform audiences. - Collaborate with visual editors from photo, graphics, digital news design, video and the home page to create high quality off-platform visuals. - Experiment with different forms of vertical and mobile visual storytelling, specifically with video. - Train social editors and other editors in the newsroom on best practices for creating social visuals, and edit the work they create. - Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world. - You will report to the Social Visuals Editor. Basic Requirements: - 4+ years of multimedia storytelling and production experience. - Experience in social media or digital journalism for a news organization. - Demonstrated experience creating presentations that intelligently incorporate audio, video, still images and text. - Strong skills with Figma and Adobe Premiere, Illustrator, Photoshop and After Effects. - Strong news and editorial judgment. - Visual design skills — a clear grasp of typography, layout, color, motion, and behavior. - Deep understanding of all mainstream and some emerging social channels. Preferred Requirements: - Experience meeting deadlines and operating in a daily, unpredictable news production environment. - Experience working collaboratively with members of a mixed-media team. - Open to working a flexible schedule that may include nights and weekends. - Experience making quick decisions under deadlines and a high-pressure newsroom environment. - Strong writing and editing skills, and knowledge of Times style or the ability to absorb and apply it quickly. Applications without links to work samples will not be considered. This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.
