Role Description As a Senior Manager on our State & Local Tax (SALT) team, you will lead complex direct tax (income/franchise) engagements for investment funds, private equity, hedge funds, and asset management clients. You’ll serve as a trusted advisor on multi-state tax matters, delivering strategic compliance, consulting, and structuring solutions with a strong emphasis on New York state taxation and Tri-State tax matters. In this role, you will: - Lead and manage complex state income and franchise tax consulting and compliance engagements, including multi-state apportionment, nexus analysis, and entity structuring. - Advise on state tax implications for investment partnerships, funds, and management company structures. - Develop and implement state income tax planning strategies, including pass-through entity (PTE) tax elections, credit and incentive analysis, and state-specific filing positions. - Serve as a technical subject matter expert on direct SALT matters, with a particular emphasis on New York state tax (required). - Monitor legislative and regulatory developments across key jurisdictions and provide strategic guidance to clients and internal teams. - Serve as primary relationship lead for SALT engagements, delivering proactive, high-quality consulting and planning advice. - Build trusted-advisor relationships by understanding clients' operations, structures, and state tax risk areas. - Provide clear, actionable recommendations on complex multi-state issues tailored to each client's business. - Collaborate across service lines—including federal tax, funds, and M&A teams—for seamless, integrated service delivery. - Review work of managers, seniors, and staff; provide coaching, feedback, and technical guidance. - Mentor and develop team members to build the next generation of SALT leaders. - Foster a collaborative, high-performance team environment. - Contribute to business development and help grow the firm's direct SALT practice. Qualifications - CPA, EA or JD required. - Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. - 8+ years of progressive SALT experience with a strong focus on direct (income/franchise) tax—not Sales & Use. - New York state tax expertise required. - Experience advising investment companies, funds, or complex entity structures strongly preferred. - Background at a Big 4 or large public accounting firm preferred. - Proven leadership, communication, and client management skills. - Interest in business development and growing a SALT practice. - Proficiency in tax research tools and Microsoft Office. - Eligibility to work in the U.S. without sponsorship. - Preferred location: New York Tri-State area (NY, NJ, CT).
