Role Description As a Senior Manager on our State & Local Tax (SALT) team, you will lead complex direct tax (income/franchise) engagements for investment funds, private equity, hedge funds, and asset management clients. You’ll serve as a trusted advisor on multi-state tax matters, delivering strategic compliance, consulting, and structuring solutions with a strong emphasis on New York state taxation and Tri-State tax matters. In this role, you will: - Lead and manage complex state income and franchise tax consulting and compliance engagements, including multi-state apportionment, nexus analysis, and entity structuring. - Advise on state tax implications for investment partnerships, funds, and management company structures. - Develop and implement state income tax planning strategies, including pass-through entity (PTE) tax elections, credit and incentive analysis, and state-specific filing positions. - Serve as a technical subject matter expert on direct SALT matters, with a particular emphasis on New York state tax (required). - Monitor legislative and regulatory developments across key jurisdictions and provide strategic guidance to clients and internal teams. - Serve as primary relationship lead for SALT engagements, delivering proactive, high-quality consulting and planning advice. - Build trusted-advisor relationships by understanding clients' operations, structures, and state tax risk areas. - Provide clear, actionable recommendations on complex multi-state issues tailored to each client's business. - Collaborate across service lines—including federal tax, funds, and M&A teams—for seamless, integrated service delivery. - Review work of managers, seniors, and staff; provide coaching, feedback, and technical guidance. - Mentor and develop team members to build the next generation of SALT leaders. - Foster a collaborative, high-performance team environment. - Contribute to business development and help grow the firm's direct SALT practice. Qualifications - CPA, EA or JD required. - Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. - 8+ years of progressive SALT experience with a strong focus on direct (income/franchise) tax—not Sales & Use. - New York state tax expertise required. - Experience advising investment companies, funds, or complex entity structures strongly preferred. - Background at a Big 4 or large public accounting firm preferred. - Proven leadership, communication, and client management skills. - Interest in business development and growing a SALT practice. - Proficiency in tax research tools and Microsoft Office. - Eligibility to work in the U.S. without sponsorship. - Preferred location: New York Tri-State area (NY, NJ, CT). Role Description As a Manager on our Sales & Use Tax team, you’ll have the opportunity to work directly with a diverse client base on complex multi-state indirect tax matters while serving as a strategic advisor and true business partner. This role offers strong visibility with clients and firm leadership, exposure to a wide variety of consulting and planning projects, and the ability to make a meaningful impact beyond day-to-day compliance work. Qualifications - Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required - Master’s degree in Taxation/Accounting a plus - CPA and/or JD preferred, but not required - 5+ years of progressive Sales & Use Tax (indirect tax) experience, including managing or leading engagements (public accounting, industry, or combination) - Strong multi-state technical knowledge (nexus, taxability, exemptions, audit defense, VDAs) with the ability to apply concepts to real client facts - Experience with indirect tax technology/tools preferred, including Avalara (e.g., mapping/taxability configuration support, reporting, returns support) and strong Excel/data skills - Strong communication, project management, and people leadership skills; comfortable as a primary client contact Requirements - Manage and review Sales & Use Tax returns across multiple jurisdictions, ensuring accuracy and timely filing - Oversee return data gathering, reconciliations, and workpaper documentation (including tie-outs to GL/sales data where applicable) - Support clients in optimizing indirect tax compliance processes and controls to improve accuracy and reduce risk - Advise clients on nexus, taxability (including product/service and SaaS/digital goods considerations, as applicable), exemptions, and audit defense - Assist with responses to state and local notices, information requests, and audit inquiries - Lead voluntary disclosure agreements (VDAs), nexus studies, exposure reviews, and related remediation planning - Identify and quantify risks and opportunities (e.g., refund opportunities, exemption gaps) and recommend the next practical steps - Serve as a technical resource for indirect tax matters, providing guidance on research, positions, and documentation - Draft and review client deliverables (memos, notices responses, audit support packages, process documentation) with clear, business-focused recommendations - Maintain awareness of legislative and regulatory changes impacting Sales & Use Tax and proactively communicate impacts to clients and internal teams - Support indirect tax technology and data initiatives, including use of Avalara for rate/taxability configuration, returns support, and reporting (as applicable by client) - Partner with clients to validate product/service mapping and taxability decisions within Avalara and related systems - Act as primary client contact, delivering proactive, high-quality service and managing expectations across timelines, scope, and deliverables - Build trusted-advisor relationships by understanding client operations, data flows, and indirect tax risk areas - Communicate complex tax concepts clearly to clients and internal teams, tailoring messages to technical and non-technical stakeholders - Review work of senior and staff accountants; provide coaching, feedback, and technical guidance to drive quality and development - Manage engagement workflows, budgets (where applicable), and deadlines; coordinate resources to ensure on-time, accurate delivery - Contribute to team training, standard workpapers, and continuous improvement initiatives Benefits - Comprehensive and competitive Total Rewards package - Time off outside of your standard PTO to give back to the community - Annual discretionary merit increases and bonuses - Talent development resources to tap into growth opportunities
