Job Description

Design Technologist

Motorola Solutions

Role Description We are looking for a technical architect with a designer’s soul. The ideal candidate understands that the future of interfaces isn't just about how things look, but how they think, react, and behave. In this role, you will be the bridge between high-level design concepts and production-ready engineering. You aren't just drawing the future; you are building its functional core. You will spend the majority of your time in leveraging LLMs and modern frameworks to prove technical viability through quick "living" prototypes. Scope of Responsibilities - High-Fidelity Prototyping: Develop functional, data-driven prototypes that go far beyond Figma. You will build tools that prove a concept's technical viability using modern web frameworks. - AI Implementation: Integrate LLMs, diffusion models, and vector databases into user-facing interfaces. You won't just call an API; you’ll optimize prompts and RAG flows to improve the overall UX. - Bridge Design & Engineering: Serve as the "connective tissue." You will translate UX wireframes and complex design requirements into technical specifications that our engineering teams can scale. - Technical Feasibility: Collaborate with designers early in the process to assess whether a proposed concept is technically achievable, bringing a "builder’s perspective" to design critiques. - Documentation: Research and document emerging AI models, APIs, and developer tools to keep the team at the bleeding edge of what's possible. Qualifications - Currently pursuing a master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, HCI, or a related technical field. A minor or concentration in Design is a plus. - Strong foundation in React, TypeScript, and Node.js. You should be comfortable spinning up a full-stack environment from scratch without a starter kit. - Demonstrated experience working with AI APIs. You must understand how to manipulate model parameters and structure data for AI consumption. - Hands-on experience crafting, testing, and refining prompts to achieve specific, reproducible outputs—not just passive use of consumer AI tools. - Basic understanding of visual hierarchy, interaction design, and user-centric thinking. You understand why a feature should exist, even if your primary focus is how to code it. Requirements - High School Diploma is required. - Must be pursuing a minimum of a Master's Degree with a graduation date of December 2026 or later. - Legal authorization to work in the U.S. indefinitely is required. Employer work permit sponsorship is not available for this position. Preferred Skills - Experience with Python for scripting and data processing. - Familiarity with vector databases or the architectural concepts of RAG. - Experience in working with Figma MCP; adept at integrating AI tools to accelerate rapid prototyping and iterative design. - Participate in hackathons, coding competitions, or AI-focused build sprints. Submission - A comprehensive portfolio showcasing your end-to-end process, technical execution, and project impact. We are looking for live web apps and technical experiments, not just static mockups or case studies. Benefits - Target Base Hourly Range: $30.00 USD - $36.00 USD. - Consistent with Motorola Solutions values and applicable law, we provide the following information to promote pay transparency and equity. Pay within this range varies and depends on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The actual offer will be based on the individual candidate. - Candidate can reside anywhere in the US. Travel Requirements - None Relocation Provided - None Position Type - Intern EEO Statement Motorola Solutions is an Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, veteran status or any other legally-protected characteristic. We are proud of our people-first and community-focused culture, empowering every Motorolan to be their most authentic self and to do their best work to deliver on the promise of a safer world. If you’d like to join our team but feel that you don’t quite meet all of the preferred skills, we’d still love to hear why you think you’d be a great addition to our team. We’re committed to providing an inclusive and accessible recruiting experience for candidates with disabilities, or other physical or mental health conditions. To request an accommodation, please complete this Reasonable Accommodations Form so we can assist you.
