The Team: Our Compliance team plays a critical role in mitigating risk and protecting Upstart’s growth and success, and as a Home Lending Compliance Associate Manager at Upstart, you will have a tremendous impact on this critical team. Someone that is successful in this role will be a ‘Go Getter’ by partnering in change, re-defining policies and improving practices. You’ll develop relationships of trust within the organization so that your role is a value add for the business unit. Your relevant skills and expertise will be an integral part of the discussion when addressing ways to further enhance the Compliance Management Systems and programs at Upstart. If you have previous compliance management experience and share our passion for consumer protection this could be the role for you. How you’ll make an impact - Advise various teams to implement compliant operational processes and regulatory requirements for mortgage loan products, primarily home equity lines of credit (HELOCs). - Assist compliance management in supervising operational processes to ensure the compliance program is effective in identifying, preventing, and correcting areas of non-compliance with internal policies or regulatory requirements. - Independently perform regulatory compliance monitoring and oversight, develop compliance KRIs, and report potential risks to management. - Work with business stakeholders to craft compliance guidance, procedures, and job aids that comply with various regulations and internal policies. - Coordinate with operations and product teams to design new controls and enhance existing controls for new and existing home mortgage products. - Partner with operations and product teams to drive efficiency, identify opportunities to improve processes, and build remediation plans to resolve issues where appropriate. - Simplify compliance regulations so that technology teams can build scalable solutions, find elegant and creative solutions to compliance requirements, and work with various technical teams to empower various stakeholders. - Support organizational change management by acting as an advocate and subject matter expert for the compliance team on strategic initiatives. - Ability to identify and effectively communicate complex compliance issues with internal and external stakeholders. - Use past experience and judgment to provide advice on industry best practices related to product details, offerings and criteria. - Support geographic expansion into new markets by assessing and implementing state-level requirements. Minimum Qualifications - Experience working within a bank's mortgage lending operations with proven knowledge of consumer protection regulation including working knowledge of applicable laws including; TILA, RESPA, ECOA, FCRA, GLBA, FDPA, Fair Housing Act, HMDA, SAFE Act, UDAAP, EFTA, SCRA, and related state laws - Proven ability to collaborate across Product, Operations, and Engineering teams - Experience working closely with Operations and Product organizations - Ability to identify, assess, and make decisions around risk - Strong written and verbal communication skills - Proactive, self-driven mindset with strong ownership - Willingness to dive deep into systems and past implementations - Comfort escalating issues and influencing stakeholders - Ability to operate effectively in ambiguous, fast-paced environment Preferred Qualifications - Experience in fintech or non-bank lending (e.g., Rocket, LoanDepot, Zillow) - Experience specifically with HELOC or home equity lending products - Familiarity with tools such as Slack, Google Sheets/Docs, and Jira Position location This role is available in the following locations: Remote Time zone requirements The team operates on the East - West coast time zones. Travel requirements As a digital first company, the majority of your work can be accomplished remotely. The majority of our employees can live and work anywhere in the U.S but are encouraged to to still spend high quality time in-person collaborating via regular onsites. The in-person sessions’ cadence varies depending on the team and role; most teams meet once or twice per quarter for 2-4 consecutive days at a time. The anticipated base salary for this position is expected to be within the below range.
