Job Description

Senior Software Architect

Buckhill Software

• Contribute toward the architectural design and evolution of the C2MS platform, guiding its progression ensuring technical debt resolution velocity is maintained in a sustainable manner, and that the monorepo strategy we’ve employed is continuously tested and improved. • Write code, conduct code reviews, and make direct technical decisions alongside the engineering team as this is a deeply hands-on role. • Identify and resolve architectural risks, technical debt, and scalability bottlenecks, and own the mitigation strategies. • Evaluate and discuss introducing, based on evidence and data-driven analysis, new technologies and approaches that deliver practical, long-term value to the platform and the team. • Champion the development of in-house AI capabilities based on enhanced OSS LLMs running on Buckhill owned, specialised AI infrastructure, that contributes toward our goal of a self-managed production-line process for software engineering, with quality and security at its core • Ensure platform architecture supports cloud-native deployment on AWS and Azure, with a focus on reliability, security, and scalability. • Design and oversee integration architecture with third-party partners covering screening, document processing, connectivity, analytics, and embedded reporting (including Metabase). • Ensure data architecture and platform design comply with GDPR and the regulatory requirements relevant to insurance and financial services. • Contribute toward an AI-first development strategy for Buckhill by contributing toward the continuous improvement of systems and workflows where AI agents actively contribute to delivery. In practice this means things like AI-assisted PR reviews, automated test generation, and internal dev copilots accelerating the engineering team's output, alongside production LLM pipelines for document ingestion and extraction already embedded in the platform. • Improve agentic development patterns that accelerate the engineering team’s output and raise the quality ceiling of the platform. • Improve LLM capabilities (e.g., Anthropic, OpenAI Enterprise, In-house AI, Azure AI) into both the development lifecycle and as product capabilities within C2MS, with a focus on developing our in-house AI capabilities (fine-tuning OSS models and contributing toward in-house AI development). • Embed AI-assisted features into core insurance workflows, such as document understanding, decision support, and workflow automation, using practical, production-grade approaches. • Champion responsible AI in an insurance context: ensuring AI-assisted decisions are auditable and explainable, and that regulatory and client trust requirements are met. • Stay current with the fast-moving agentic AI landscape, continuously evaluating new tooling and patterns for applicability to our platform and delivery model. • Set and maintain engineering standards across the team, including API design, CI/CD practices, containerisation, testing, and code quality, by example as much as by guidance. • Mentor developers across the team, raising the overall engineering standard and fostering a culture of continuous improvement in a lean organisation. • Collaborate with DevOps to ensure infrastructure supports secure, scalable, and automated deployments. • Communicate architectural thinking clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including product and commercial leadership. • Contribute to RFP responses, vendor evaluations, and pre-sales conversations as a credible technical authority. • Act as a bridge between technical teams and commercial or client-facing stakeholders, translating complex architectural concepts into clear business terms. • Support the Lead Product Owner in aligning the technology roadmap with client needs and business strategy.

Job Requirements

  • 10+ years in software development and architecture, with a track record of delivering and evolving production platforms at scale.
  • Demonstrably hands-on: you write code with a focus on agentic development, engage in code review, and make technical decisions.
  • Strong breadth across modern web platform stacks, with experience working across languages such as PHP, Python, or TypeScript, and comfort with relational databases and message bus patterns regardless of specific framework experience.
  • Experience with payment processing and ecommerce platforms
  • Practical experience with AI/LLM integration, such as building real features or workflows using tools such as Anthropic, OpenAI, Azure AI and OSS AI models.
  • Experience designing and evolving platform architecture, including working with and progressively improving monolithic codebases.
  • Cloud deployment experience on AWS and/or Azure, with solid understanding of scalable, secure, cloud-native infrastructure patterns.
  • Strong API design skills and experience with integration architecture, including third-party partner and ecosystem connectivity.
  • Ability to work effectively in a small, fast-moving team in addition to being pragmatic, delivery-focused, and comfortable with ambiguity.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage confidently with developers, product leadership, and commercial stakeholders.
  • Experience with agentic AI frameworks and development tooling, such as designing workflows where AI agents contribute to coding, testing, or continuous improvement.
  • Background in insurance, financial services, or another regulated industry
  • Experience with embedded analytics platforms (e.g., Metabase or similar).
  • Familiarity with SaaS or PaaS product development.
  • Relevant certifications such as AWS/Azure Solutions Architect or TOGAF are valued but not a differentiator as practical delivery matters more.
  • Active participation in the InsurTech or broader technology community, such as speaking, writing, or working groups are a plus.

Benefits

  • Remote work
  • Sponsored professional learning
  • Fully covered sick leave
  • Child and family support
  • A friendly and supportive team
  • Career switch opportunities
  • A healthy work-life balance
  • Permanent full-time contract
  • Working schedule flexibility
  • Multi-role options
  • Leadership opportunities

The Best Way to Move People High-capacity, on-demand, and affordable mobility

Part TimeHybridTeam 51-200Since 2016H1B Sponsor

Title: Senior Embedded Software Engineer Location: Pittsburgh, PA Job Description: Who we are: Glydways is reimagining what public transit can be. We believe that mobility is the gateway to opportunity—connecting people to housing, education, employment, commerce, and care. By making transportation more accessible, affordable, and sustainable, we empower communities to thrive and unlock economic and social prosperity. Our mission is to revolutionize transit with a solution that delivers high capacity, exceptional user experiences, unmatched affordability, and minimal environmental impact. The Glydways system is a groundbreaking network of carbon-neutral, interconnected transit pathways powered by standardized autonomous vehicles on dedicated roadways. Operating 24/7 with on-demand access, it offers personalized and efficient mobility—without the burden of heavy upfront infrastructure costs or ongoing taxpayer subsidies. With Glydways, we’re building more than a transportation system; we’re creating a future where everyone, everywhere, has the freedom to move. Meet the team: The Embedded Software team is where the vehicle comes to life. We write and load the firmware that turns raw hardware—sensor kits, custom boards, and main compute—into a reliable, safety-critical machine. Because our software touches nearly every subsystem, we collaborate with engineers from across the company and get hands-on with the newest hardware in the building. About the Role: As a Senior Embedded Software Engineer, you will own critical firmware domains, lead complex cross-functional projects, and help shape our embedded platform and engineering best practices. This is firmware that carries real passengers—on a Glydways vehicle, reliability is a safety requirement, not just a performance goal, and the code you ship is part of the safety case. Roles & Responsibilities: - Design, prototype, build, and test production vehicle firmware for safety-critical systems. - Develop and optimize applications in RTOS environments, tuning for reliability, latency, throughput, memory footprint, and power on resource-constrained platforms. - Own and evolve the communication architecture between MCUs, sensors, and main compute, across both standard and custom protocols (SPI, UART, I2C, CAN, TCP/UDP, and more). - Lead bring-up and debugging for new boards and SoCs—bootloaders, drivers, and low-level diagnostics—partnering with electrical engineers and software developers to take new sensor and compute platforms from prototype to production. - Define and build automated testing frameworks and harnesses at the unit, integration, and system levels alongside test and platform engineers. - Mentor other embedded engineers, give thorough code reviews, and help set engineering standards, tools, and best practices across the team. - Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Core technical skills - Expert-level C and/or C++ for embedded systems; additional languages and tooling are a plus. - Strong command of communication protocols, from low level (SPI, UART, I2C, CAN) to higher level (TCP/UDP). - Experience developing on RTOS environments (e.g., PX5 or other POSIX/pthreads-based real-time OSes such as embedded Linux with pthreads, QNX, VxWorks, or RTEMS). - Experience with MCU bootloaders, device drivers, and new board or SoC bring-up. - Experience deploying firmware to multi-device systems or vehicles in a power-safe, fault-tolerant way. - Demonstrated speed and size optimization for resource-constrained platforms. - Process and quality - Experience with safety-critical systems and processes (e.g., ISO 26262 or similar standards) is highly valued. - Solid understanding of the embedded software development life cycle—version control, code review, CI, and automated testing. - Nice to have - Experience in automotive and/or transit domains. - Experience with automotive-grade safety MCUs — ideally the NXP S32K3 family, or comparable lockstep/ASIL-rated parts (e.g., Infineon AURIX, TI TMS570). - Familiarity with kernel internals and low-level OS concepts. - Experience with deterministic timing and networking, such as NTP, PTP, or time-sensitive networking (TSN). - Experience with CAN tooling and DBC-based workflows. - Comfort with electronics test equipment and hardware debugging (multimeters, oscilloscopes, power supplies, etc.). - Scripting experience (e.g., Python) for test automation and tooling. - Typical experience - Typically 7+ years developing embedded software for production systems, including substantial work on safety-critical or highly reliable platforms (automotive, aerospace, medical, industrial, robotics, etc.). - *If you’re excited about this work but don’t check every box, we’d still love to hear from you. We know the best candidates don’t always match every line of a job description. ** This is a hybrid role, 2 days/week from our Pittsburg, PA office. No relocation assistance available. Glydways provides equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants for employment and prohibits discrimination and harassment of any type without regard to race, color, religion, age, sex, national origin, disability status, genetics, protected veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state or local laws.
