Role Description The Data Enablement team builds the platforms and frameworks that move and serve data across Block. We support four core capabilities — online and offline data projections, a third-party data proxy, and graph data stores — for customers across the company, including Risk, Compliance, Data Engineering, and Data Science. As a Staff Software Engineer on the team, you will become the subject-matter expert and a significant contributor to our online data projections and event-streaming capabilities — designing the platform, frameworks, and standards that turn Block's event streams into low-latency, production-grade data products. Your work sets the technical direction for how teams across the company build on streaming data. You Will - Become the subject-matter expert for Block's online data projections and event-streaming capabilities — designing the platform, frameworks, and standards others build on. - Lead the technical direction for real-time, event-driven data systems used by business units across Block. - Build and operate streaming pipelines and projection frameworks on high-volume event data. - Partner with engineering teams across Block to turn Kafka event streams into reliable, low-latency data products. - Improve the reliability, observability, and data quality of streaming systems running in production. - Mentor engineers on the team and shape platform architecture and standards. - Contribute to and grow familiar with the team's other domains over time — supporting our third-party data proxy backend applications, graph data store capabilities, and offline batch data projections. Qualifications - 8+ years of professional software engineering experience (or Block equivalent, as referenced in go/levels). - Deep experience designing and operating distributed, high-throughput backend systems in production. - Hands-on experience with event-driven architecture and streaming platforms such as Kafka. - Experience building streaming or real-time data systems; hands-on experience with Spark Structured Streaming or Flink is strongly preferred. - Proficiency in a JVM language such as Kotlin, or a comparable backend or systems programming background. - Experience building on cloud infrastructure, ideally AWS. - A track record of leading technical projects and mentoring other engineers. - Bonus points for a data engineering background (building data pipelines, lakehouse or warehouse modeling, or large-scale batch and streaming systems). • Lead and scale a multi-disciplinary team of AI Engineers, Data Scientists, Data Engineers, and Product Managers • Define the 3-year vision and technical roadmap for AI deployment across GTM systems • Direct the creation of production-grade AI models, consumption forecasting engines, and automated data pipelines • Set execution standards for AI-generated analysis and model outputs • Collaborate with Engineering, Product, and RevOps leaders on data models • Champion and embed Samsara’s cultural principles as we scale globally

• Drive alignment across engineering, product, and leadership on AI investment priorities and set the multi-year technical roadmap. • Partner with Product, Design, and Data Science to take high-impact ML initiatives from concept to production. • Ensure high-quality, efficient data pipelines that support both business and AI needs. • Define and own success metrics that tie ML work directly to business outcomes. • Grow and mentor a team of ML/Data engineers, raising the technical bar across the org. • Lead and mentor a senior team of Managers and Engineers across Machine Learning, Data Engineering and Software Engineering. • This role is highly cross functional so you will partner with senior leadership across Engineering, Data Science, Product, and across our Business to align stakeholders, define multi-year roadmaps, set and execute on iterative milestones. • Coaching and developing team members, helping them grow their careers, technical expertise, and collaboration skills.

Qualifications - Must have a Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field. - Ten (10) years of experience in Software Engineering, with at least five (5) years of post-bachelor's progressive experience. Requirements - Five (5) years of experience with/in managing, building, and leading engineering teams delivering software products. - Applying hands-on technical expertise at scale to guide architecture and technical strategy resolutions in collaboration with staff engineers. - Designing, delivering, and operating business critical services at scale. - User-facing product, front-end and back-end services, scaling database systems, and API design on a team of 4-8 engineers. - Designing and building services in monolithic and multi-service architectures. - DevOps and operational ownership, from standing up observability posture through managing and iterating on operational rigor and on-call health.
