Role Description The main function of a paralegal is to assist lawyers by researching legal precedent, investigating facts, or preparing legal documents. A typical paralegal is responsible for conducting research to support a legal proceeding, formulate a defense or to initiate legal action. Job Responsibilities - Prepare correspondence and legal papers such as summonses, complaints, motions, responses, and subpoenas under the supervision of an attorney or a paralegal. - Review legal journals and assist with legal research. - May assist new lawyers how to prepare documents for submission to the courts. - Assist attorneys in collecting information such as employment, medical, and other records. - Attend legal meetings, such as client interviews, hearings, or depositions, and take notes. - Organize and maintain law libraries, documents, and case files. - Prepare and process legal documents and papers, such as summonses, subpoenas, complaints, appeals, motions, and pretrial agreements. Qualifications - Verbal and written communication skills, attention to detail, customer service and interpersonal skills. - Basic ability to work independently and manage one’s time. - Basic knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, and the democratic political process. - Previous experience with computer applications, such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel. Requirements - Associate's degree in paralegal studies or equivalent training required. - 0-2 years experience required.
