Engineering Manager, Developer Experience

• Define the long term strategy for the DevEx team, ensuring it remains a value add partner to the broader Engineering organization. • Direct the creation of standardized IDE configurations, plugins, and bootstrapping processes to ensure every developer has a frictionless experience. • Identify high leverage opportunities to improve developer productivity and measure success through metrics like deployment frequency and lead time for changes. • Lead the effort to audit and consolidate the existing landscape of AI tools, overseeing selection, budget, and implementation. • Establish engineering standards and governance models that maintain consistency across all product teams. • Oversee the design of YAML workflows and pipelines that developers interact with daily. • Manage the transition from legacy systems to modern build tools like Turborepo to reduce build and test latencies.

Job Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience managing engineering teams, specifically those focused on internal tooling, developer productivity, or platform engineering.
  • 5+ years of experience in Software Engineering, with a strong understanding of the TypeScript/Node.js ecosystem and monorepo architectures.
  • Familiarity with Docker, CI/CD platforms (GitHub Actions), and the current AI assisted engineering landscape.
  • Ability to translate developer pain points into a prioritized technical roadmap.
  • A strong focus on the developer as a customer, with a passion for building internal products that people actually want to use.

Role Overview We are building a brand new Developer Experience (DevEx) Team as a core strategic investment in our engineering organization's growth and efficiency. As a Staff Engineer, you will be a technical leader with a massive multiplier effect, setting the vision for how hundreds of engineers interact with our codebase. You will be the primary architect of the Golden Path, ensuring that from the moment a developer opens their IDE to the moment their code hits production, the process is seamless, fast, and intuitive. You will own the local development environment, lead our AI consolidation strategy, and define the standards for how we build software at scale. Key Responsibilities The Golden Path and Local Development Standardize the IDE: Create and maintain the Golden Path for developers, including recommended plugins, configurations, and internal tooling to reduce cognitive load. Local Experience: Own the bootstrapping process for new services. Optimize local Docker workflows and resource allocation to ensure dev environments are fast and reliable. Dev Tooling: Lead the architectural transition of our build systems (migrating to Turborepo) to drastically reduce build and test latencies across the organization. AI and Innovation AI Tooling Consolidation: Audit and consolidate the existing landscape of AI tools. You will lead the selection and implementation of a unified AI suite to ensure consistent adoption and cost efficiency. Modernization: Lead the strategic planning for language specific upgrades, specifically TypeScript versioning and migration paths. Governance and Security Library Management: Partner with AppSec to manage and approve library versions, ensuring our dependencies are secure without slowing down feature delivery. Standardization: Establish engineering standards and governance models that allow for autonomy while maintaining system wide consistency. CI/CD and Workflow Orchestration Workflow Design: Design the YAML workflows, pipelines, and automated checks that developers interact with daily. Automated Deployments: Architect and implement self service automation for deployments, reducing manual intervention and ensuring a repeatable, push button experience for all engineering teams. Testing Strategy: Integrate automated testing and quality gates into the pipeline to ensure shift left testing is a reality.
