Title: Accounting Manager - Payroll & Corporate Accounting Location: Upton, NY Job Description: The Business Services Directorate (BSD) provides high-quality business services to support the Lab's research initiatives by participating in cross-functional teams with a focus on risk mitigation and cost management, which is a critical component to the Lab's success. Led by the Chief Financial Officer, Brookhaven’s Business Services Directorate includes the Budget Office, Fiscal Services Division, Procurement & Property Management Division, Chief Financial Office, and the Business Operations Offices. The Directorate manages a broad range of financial activities, including the planning and implementation of the Lab’s fiscal matters and its approximately $900 million annual budget. The function of the Fiscal Services Division (FSD) is to innovatively support the mission critical research of Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). FSD provides Payroll, Accounts Payable, General Accounting, Financial Reporting, and Travel Services support to the Laboratory. The open position is for an Accounting Manager – Payroll and Corporate Accounting. The Accounting Manager – Payroll and Corporate Accounting, is responsible for financial reporting specific to Payroll, Labor Cost, and BSA Corporate/Intercompany Accounting. This position will be responsible for developing and maintaining accounting principles, practices, and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting and procedures. The Accounting Manager supervises and directs the work of the BSA Accountant and is responsible for managing the Payroll Supervisor and staff to ensure that work is properly allocated and completed in a timely and accurate manner. This position addresses tight deadlines and a multitude of accounting activities including account reconciliations to the general ledger, financial reporting, auditor liaison, and year-end audit preparation. The Accounting Manager will have contact and input on policy decisions with senior-level management and the accounting staff of the company’s managing partners and thus, requires strong interpersonal communication skills both written and verbal. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: - Obtain and maintain a thorough understanding of the BSA financial reporting and general ledger structure. - Ensure accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and year-end reporting. - Obtain and maintain a thorough understanding of the payroll practices. - Ensure payroll tax payments are made timely. - Prepare all required payroll tax returns to taxing authorities. - Remit amounts, prepare, and maintain the information related to Foreign Nationals and the 1042 tax deposits and returns. - Banking: Chase Access Security Administrator. - Management of staff responsible for the reconciliation of assigned general ledger accounts. - Oversee the preparation and remittances of annual 1099’s and vendor compliance. - Prepare 401A and 401K Financials. - Review of W-2s; preparation of W-2C’s, and 941x forms. - Prepare and submit annual 990 and tax return data to Battelle. - Prepare and enter JV’s to move unallowable costs from BNL to BSA, coordinating with Budget Office to ensure overheads are included. - Provide daily cash needs for DOE reporting. - Respond to inquiries from the Fiscal Officer, CFO, and other Lab Managers regarding financial results, special reporting requests, etc.. - Support OIG, Internal Audit, and all other financial audits. - Supervise the BSA Accountant to ensure all financial reporting deadlines are met. - Respond to tax inquiries and other issues. - Provide training to new and existing staff, as needed. - Supervise staff of 3. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: - BS in Accounting or business degree. - Minimum of six (6) years of full-time directly related experience in accounting to include experience supervising exempt and nonexempt staff. - Knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel, Outlook and Word. - Clear and concise written and verbal communication skills. - Strong customer service skills. - Ability to meet deadlines and work within tight time constraints. Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: - Oracle People Soft Financials. - CPA and/or MBA preferred. - Peoplesoft query experience. Other Information: - This is a hybrid position and requires 4 days a week onsite at BNL in Upton, NY and one day working remote. Role Description The Payroll Analyst is responsible for supporting the accurate, timely, and compliant processing of multi-state payroll operations while providing analytical oversight of payroll, benefits, and general ledger activities. This role serves as a key resource in ensuring payroll accuracy, financial reconciliation, regulatory compliance, and process efficiency. The Payroll Analyst partners with Human Resources, Finance, and operational leaders to investigate discrepancies, resolve payroll issues, support audits, and improve payroll processes and reporting capabilities.
