Job Description

Design Engineer – Design Engineer

Shakepay

• Own problems end-to-end: Take full responsibility for product features — from understanding the problem to designing the experience, writing front-end code, and delivering it to users. • Prototype in code: Replace static mockups with working prototypes to validate ideas quickly and reduce decision risk through real customer feedback. • Drive design-led development: Work in time-boxed, variable-scope environments. Focus on outcomes rather than output, partnering closely with backend and core engineering to deliver significant impact. • Deliver quickly without sacrificing quality: Balance speed with craftsmanship. Ship polished, production-ready experiences on tight timelines with meticulous attention to detail in both design and code. • Elevate UI architecture: Evolve our design system and component libraries so design and code remain tightly aligned across mobile and web platforms. • Act as a force multiplier: Raise the overall level of the design team by helping designers ship code and integrating AI tools into their workflows, improving speed, autonomy, and technical depth across the organization.

Job Requirements

  • Proven hybrid experience: You have shipped real products where you owned both the design and the code implementation (e.g., React Native, Node, TypeScript, Vue.js).
  • A builder portfolio: You can present live products (not just mockups) that you designed and built. You likely use AI tools to prototype, iterate, and accelerate your workflow.
  • Strong product sensibility: You have a keen eye for quality and know what makes an experience intuitive, fast, and delightful.
  • Deep technical understanding: You understand the constraints and possibilities of modern front-end development and design accordingly, creating performant, scalable, and maintainable solutions.
  • Builder mindset: You don’t wait for specifications. You define problems, make decisions, and drive work to completion with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent communication skills: You can clearly articulate design decisions and technical trade-offs between design and engineering.

Benefits

  • Become a shareholder: Every employee receives stock options as part of their compensation.
  • Reach your goals: Annual salary reviews.
  • Health and wellness: Access to medical and dental coverage, including health and wellness spending accounts.
  • Remote-friendly: Work from anywhere in Canada, with optional access to our offices in Montreal and Toronto.
  • Level up: An annual $2,000 CAD budget for courses, certifications, and training to support your career growth.
  • Vacation: 20 days of vacation per year. If you use all your vacation days, we offer a $1,000 bonus.
  • Parental leave: Receive a parental leave top-up of up to 100% of your salary for 18 weeks.
  • Have fun together: Quarterly team or company-wide outings to encourage in-person connections.
