Role Description
The Hexagon Smart Materials Lead is responsible for the configuration, administration, and governance of the Hexagon Smart® Materials system in support of engineering, procurement, fabrication, and construction activities. This role ensures the integrity, availability, and effective use of materials data across the project lifecycle, enabling accurate material control, reporting, and integration with other engineering and enterprise systems.

Serve as the system owner and subject matter expert for Hexagon Smart Materials.

Configure and maintain Smart Materials projects, catalogs, commodity codes, specifications, and rules.

Manage materials workflows, including requisitions, purchase orders, material take-offs (MTOs), and status tracking.

Coordinate with engineering disciplines (Piping, E&I, Structural, Mechanical) to ensure correct material data and model integration.

Support procurement and construction teams with accurate materials reporting and traceability.

Develop and maintain project-specific procedures, standards, and best practices for materials management.

Manage system users, roles, permissions, and security.

Perform data quality checks, audits, and troubleshooting to ensure data accuracy and consistency.

Coordinate system interfaces and integrations with:

Smart 3D / Smart P&ID

ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle)

Document management systems

Provide user support, training, and mentoring for engineers, designers, and material coordinators.

Support system upgrades, patches, and testing activities.

Generate standard and ad-hoc materials reports for project and management use.

Participate in continuous improvement initiatives related to digital engineering and materials lifecycle management.
Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Information Systems, Construction Management, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).

5+ years of experience using Hexagon Smart Materials in an EPC, owner/operator, or industrial environment.

Demonstrated knowledge of materials management processes in capital projects.

MTO and procurement workflows

Strong understanding of engineering deliverables and materials data flows.

Experience working with multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Requirements

Experience integrating Smart Materials with SAP or other ERP systems.

Familiarity with Hexagon Smart 3D, Smart P&ID, or other Hexagon engineering tools.

Experience supporting large, complex EPC projects.

Knowledge of construction and fabrication materials tracking.

Previous experience in a materials lead or system administrator role.
