HPC Scientific Software Engineer

JHU EEHPC

• Support faculty, researchers, and students engaged in high-performance and AI-driven research. • Deploy, optimize, and maintain scientific software and computational workflows on advanced HPC Systems and related infrastructure. • Manage and troubleshoot complex software stacks, containerized applications, and GPU-accelerated workloads using tools such as SLURM, Easy build, Spack, etc. • Collaborate closely with interdisciplinary research groups to enhance system performance, streamline data-intensive workflows, and integrate cutting-edge technologies. • Analyze and optimize the performance of AI models and HPC applications, focusing on GPU-enabled computing. • Implement parallel processing, distributed computing, and resource management techniques for efficient job execution. • Develop, debug, and maintain software tools, libraries, and frameworks supporting HPC and AI workloads. • Manage and support scientific software deployment across HPC, cloud-based, and colocation facilities.

Job Requirements

  • Master’s degree in computer science or a closely related quantitative discipline.
  • Five years of experience in HPC user support, software deployment, and performance optimization within an academic or research environment.
  • Experience in scientific computing environments and applications.
  • Hands-on experience with SLURM, for job scheduling.
  • Proficiency in Python, Perl, C/C++, and Shell scripting for automation and system management.
  • Advanced knowledge of Linux systems and proficiency in scripting languages such as Python, Perl, and Shell.
  • Familiarity with scientific application management tools such as Containerization, LUA modules, CMake, Spack, and EasyBuild.
  • Training Workshops, Performance Optimization and Troubleshooting.

Role Description We're looking for a Full Stack Engineer to help build and evolve the products used every day by thousands of clinics and millions of patients. You'll own product features end-to-end, from backend logic to the interface the user actually touches. Role Description Research Computing at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) empowers researchers by removing technical barriers to discovery. We provide access to high-performance computing (HPC), GPU-accelerated compute, scientific software, research data management (featuring the PNNL Research Library), and cloud computing. We sit within the Computing and Information Technology directorate, which supports PNNL's mission across science, energy, and national security. This is a cohort-based internship program. Interns work in small teams, each paired with mentors and project stewards from across the Lab. Assignments run 10 to 12 weeks with the possibility of extension. Participants will be starting in cohort sessions and must be available to start in May or June 2027. As a Masters-level intern, you may take on additional responsibility in areas like technical leadership, architecture decisions, or guiding project direction alongside your mentor. You will work on the same teams as undergraduate interns and are expected to contribute to a collaborative, supportive team environment.
