Title: Director of Membership Location: New York, NY Job Description: Apartment Therapy was originally launched in 2001 by interior designer Maxwell Ryan (nicknamed “The Apartment Therapist”) as a weekly newsletter for clients. We officially became an independently-owned company in 2004, and since then Apartment Therapy Media has grown to become the only media group dedicated to life at home. We are committed to teaching our audience real-life solutions by giving them tools to create happy, healthy homes through our award-winning brands: Apartment Therapy, The Kitchn, Cubby, and Dorm Therapy. Together, our portfolio engages a monthly audience of 47 million users across platforms, while our dedicated team of over 140 professionals collaborates from our sunny New York City office and locations across the U.S. and around the globe. We’re looking for a Director of Membership to lead and grow our membership business across Apartment Therapy and The Kitchn. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who has run a membership or subscription program and is excited to take ownership of an emerging, high-potential part of our business. You’ll begin by leading our existing Kitchn membership program — owning its performance, deepening member engagement, and sharpening the offering through the first half of the year. From there, you’ll help shape and launch a membership program for Apartment Therapy, defining what membership means for a home and design audience. Membership is a growing, incremental part of our revenue strategy, and we believe it can become a meaningful share of the business over time. You’ll own that opportunity — the strategy, the P&L, and the day-to-day execution — reporting directly to our Founder & CEO, with a close working partnership with our editorial leadership. Responsibilities - Own the membership P&L across both brands, with clear goals, forecasting, and performance tracking - Lead the existing Kitchn membership program — driving acquisition, engagement, conversion, and retention - Define and launch a new membership offering for Apartment Therapy, in close partnership with editorial and product - Build a data-driven roadmap of tests and initiatives across the full member lifecycle: onboarding, conversion, renewal, win-back, and reactivation - Analyze member behavior and churn drivers, and translate insight into prioritized action - Partner cross-functionally with editorial, product, marketing, and analytics to deliver a seamless member experience - Clearly articulate the value of membership to both prospective and existing members - Build and lead a small team, starting with one direct report and growing as the program scales Requirements - 6–8+ years of experience in membership, subscription, or audience-revenue roles, including time running a membership or subscription program - A background in media, publishing, or content - A strategic operator’s mindset — comfortable owning a P&L and setting direction, while staying close to execution - Strong analytical skills and a genuine test-and-learn instinct; fluency with subscription metrics and lifecycle data - Proven ability to lead cross-functional work and align partners without relying on direct authority - Genuine affinity for our subject matter — homes, design, food, and the way people live - Experience launching a membership or subscription program from the ground up is a plus - Ability to work from our NYC headquarters on a hybrid schedule, at least 2x per week Budgeted Salary: $150,000 - 175,000 annually The above represents the expected salary range for this role. Ultimately, compensation is determined by level of experience and other job-related factors. Apartment Therapy Media is an equal opportunity employer that works to foster diversity and inclusion. All employment decisions are based on business needs, job requirements and individual qualifications, without regard to race, gender identity, orientation, religion, parental status, or any other status protected by the laws or regulations in the locations where we operate. We encourage people from all backgrounds to apply.
