Job Description

Engineering Manager

FORM │ Virtual obesity medicine clinic

• Lead, coach, and grow a small (but growing) team of engineers delivering business-critical clinical, operational, and patient-facing systems • Establish clear goals and execution plans aligned with product and company priorities • Foster a culture of ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement • Provide direct feedback, mentorship, and career development for engineers at multiple levels • Level up the team: raise the technical and delivery bar through pairing, code review, and hands-on coaching, and grow engineers' fluency with modern, AI-native delivery practices • Hire thoughtfully to strengthen team capability and long-term scalability • Guide architectural decisions across backend services, workflows, integrations, internal tools, and patient-facing web and mobile experiences • Partner closely with senior engineers to ensure systems are reliable, scalable, secure, and maintainable • Maintain strong technical fluency across systems built with technologies such as Ruby on Rails, Node.js, React / Next.js, React Native, TypeScript, and AWS-based infrastructure • Ensure healthy CI/CD pipelines and safe deployment practices that support incremental delivery in a regulated healthcare environment • Champion small-batch, continuous delivery—small PRs, short-lived branches, feature flags, and tight feedback loops—so the team ships safely and frequently • Drive an agentic, AI-native approach to building software: lead as a manager of agents, and coach engineers to make AI developer tools (e.g., Claude Code) a core part of how they design, build, test, and review—without compromising engineering rigor • Use DORA metrics and other delivery signals to continuously raise the team's throughput and stability • Identify technical risks early and lead mitigation strategies before they impact care delivery • Oversee development of the experiences patients rely on daily (onboarding and activation, video visits, secure messaging, photo and data journaling, device and health-data integrations) and the systems that power the care team (clinical charting, scheduling, task management, care coordination, automation, and intelligent workflow enhancements) • Drive measurable improvements in the outcomes that matter for your team—engagement, activation, retention, reliability, efficiency, and clinician experience • Ensure experiences meet a high bar for accessibility (WCAG/ADA), performance, and reliability • Ensure systems handle patient data safely and operate within HIPAA and broader healthcare regulatory requirements • Support thoughtful integration of automation and AI capabilities where appropriate, always prioritizing human oversight and patient safety • Partner closely with product, design, clinical, and operations leaders to define roadmaps and deliver measurable impact • Translate complex, evolving business and clinical requirements into clear engineering plans • Provide structure and clarity in ambiguous problem spaces • Balance speed of delivery with operational reliability and long-term platform health

Job Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience managing engineering teams
  • Prior experience as a senior or staff-level engineer before moving into management
  • Leading delivery of complex production systems—whether consumer/patient-facing applications across mobile and web, or backend and workflow-heavy services
  • A track record of instilling strong delivery fundamentals—small-batch and continuous delivery, feature flags, testing, and operational excellence—and coaching teams to adopt them
  • Partnering closely with product, design, and domain experts to shape execution plans
  • Communicating effectively across technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Hands-on fluency with agentic, AI-native software development (e.g., Claude Code and similar tools)—you practice it yourself and can model and coach it into the team while maintaining strong engineering rigor
  • Experience in healthcare, clinical systems, consumer health, mobile applications, workflow tooling, AI-enabled products, or other regulated domains is a strong plus, but not required.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and equity in a high growth start-up
  • Comprehensive health benefits (medical, dental, vision)
  • 401k program
  • Flexible work schedules and paid time off
  • Paid parental leave

This is a people-leadership role: you'll be accountable for your team's reliability, quality, and delivery, and for the health and day-to-day running of the team itself — partnering with senior engineers, other engineering leads, Product, and operations. Occasional hands-on work is welcome but isn't expected. Key Responsibilities - Run the Team: - Set direction and standards. - Set the hiring bar and run the interview process to keep the team well-staffed. - Plan capacity and shape how it operates day to day. - Lead and Develop the Team: - Run 1:1s, real-time feedback, and performance reviews. - Coach engineers toward individualized growth and address performance issues early. - Build a culture of psychological safety, transparency, agency, and high standards. - Drive Reliability and Operational Excellence: - Be accountable for the availability, performance, and resilience of the team's systems. - Ensure engineering process, on-call health, incident follow-through, and observability and tooling (APM, tracing, synthetic/health checks). - Drive Delivery: - Be accountable for the team's delivery cadence and outcomes. - Influence the roadmap to include the technical-investment and reliability work the systems need. - Partner across the Org: - Collaborate as a peer with the team's senior engineers and other engineering leads. - Work with Product, peer Engineering Managers, and operations and infrastructure partners. - Keep leadership informed on progress, risks, and trade-offs. Qualifications - 7+ years of software engineering experience, including production systems, integrations, and operations. - 2+ years of engineering management experience — hiring, setting direction, coaching, and developing engineers across levels. - A track record of delivering complex technical work at quality, balancing feature delivery against reliability and technical investment. - Experience leading teams that own production systems — on-call, incident response, and reliability. - A track record of building inclusive, collaborative cultures grounded in psychological safety, agency, and continuous learning. - Technical credibility to guide architecture and trade-off decisions for backend and distributed systems. - Hands-on background with .NET/C# and distributed systems, plus AWS and containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes). - Excellent communication across technical and non-technical audiences. - A data-informed approach to team health, delivery, and reliability. - Comfortable leading through shifting priorities and balancing the team's capacity against what the business needs. Preferred - Trading, fintech, or other regulated financial environments — futures or trading-platform experience is a plus. - High-availability, low-latency, or real-time systems. - Microservices and real-time messaging (e.g., WebSocket/SignalR). - Cloud operations / infrastructure and on-call. - CI/CD tooling (e.g., Argo CD, GitHub Actions). Benefits - Seven Company-paid Holidays and generous Family Leave. Paid time off is front-loaded. - Competitive 401(k) matching, health, dental, and vision insurance is offered for full-time employees. - Vacations are encouraged with a bonus for taking 5 consecutive days. - Employee referrals are bonused. - Topstep offers a food and groceries budget and contributes towards health and wellness. Roadmap and Timeline to Success Within the first 30 days you will: · Onboard into your new role and get familiar with our product offering, platform, and technology. · Get to know your engineers and leads, understand what motivates them, and identify their areas of development. · Take ownership of your team's operating cadence, planning, standups, and retrospectives, so you have a direct, firsthand read on the team's work and its status. · Seek to deeply understand the business problems and common engineering challenges your team owns, and begin forming your own view of them. · Interview stakeholders to understand business goals, the product roadmap, and the challenges ahead. By 90 days you will: · Motivate, encourage, and challenge your team(s) to find optimal synergy. · Understand the technical challenges ahead and actively participate in technical decision-making. · Understand your team's decision-making process and challenge them to find more optimal solutions. · Know the real status of your team's critical-path work at any time, without needing it surfaced for you. · Have regular syncs with your stakeholders and own the cross-team commitments your team has made. · Be implementing fast, iterative improvements to delivery and quality. By 6 months you will: · Be making significant, measurable progress on technical debt while balancing new feature delivery and defect resolution. · Have a team that is consistently delivering on its commitments by deadline. · Have earned the trust of your team and become a respected partner to your stakeholders. · Be attracting and motivating excellent engineers who care about great teams and great software. · Have your personal goals on track.
