Database Migrations Engineer

Laravel

Engineer15 days ago
Full TimeRemoteMid LevelTeam 11-50Since 2011H1B No Sponsor

Role Description Laravel is the most popular PHP framework in the world. 500M+ lifetime downloads. Thousands of packages. A developer community that shows up at conferences, in forums, on Twitter, in Discord servers, in every "what framework should I use?" thread on the internet. But Laravel is more than a framework. It's a complete platform. From choosing a stack, to building an app, to deploying it, monitoring it, and scaling it. Laravel Cloud is our managed PaaS, and enterprise customers moving onto it face a common, stubborn blocker: database migration. We need someone who solves that problem directly. Why This Job Is Unique - You will be on calls with enterprise customers and you will run the migration with them. - Not routing tickets. Not advising from a distance. Actually owning the technical execution alongside the customer. - There is existing database migration work that needs an owner - including the PlanetScale relationship and recurring ad-hoc requests scattered across channels. - You are not starting from zero. - The brief is to build the muscle, not wait for the full menu. - You’ll be learning what customers need, productising the repeatable parts, and making the case for what comes next. - You will seed what you know. - Documentation, runbooks, and lightweight training so Sales, CS and engineering compound on your expertise rather than staying dependent on it. Qualifications - Genuine strength across both MySQL and Postgres. - Direct experience with database migrations in a customer-facing capacity. - A productisation instinct. - Strong written and async communication. - Comfort operating in a role where part of the scope is yours to define. Requirements - Execute database migrations with enterprise and Private Cloud customers. - Assume ownership of the PlanetScale relationship and migration work. - Productise repeatable migration patterns. - Automate recurring migration requests. - Own broader app and service migrations in the gaps. - Distribute what you learn. - Keep the database offering competitive. Benefits - Work From Home - Health Care Plan (Medical, Dental & Vision) - Paid Time Off (Vacation, Sick & Public Holidays) - Family Leave (Maternity, Paternity) - Stock Option Plan

Role Description Laravel is looking for a Senior Engineering Manager to lead our all-remote Laravel Cloud Infrastructure organization. Our mission is to improve the experience of developers everywhere in the world. This role is about developing leaders, guiding technical direction across multiple teams, and creating an environment where engineers can do their best work. In this role, you will lead the Infrastructure organization responsible for our recently announced Laravel Cloud platform – a fully managed infrastructure platform built for developers and teams who just want to ship their next big idea, relentlessly optimized for Laravel and PHP. Location: Between EU West and US East for optimal collaboration with the team. Responsibilities - Lead, mentor, and grow a distributed team of Engineering Team Leads, including our Infrastructure and SRE leads. - Set the standard for how those leads manage, develop, and grow their own engineers. - Foster an engineering culture that emphasizes autonomy, ownership, reliability, and continuous improvement across the organization. - Support career development through 1:1s, goal setting, and regular feedback – both with your direct reports and, by extension, the wider organization. - Collaborate with leadership to shape strategy, resourcing, and roadmap for the infrastructure organization. - Own reliability, availability, and performance outcomes across the platform, including our SRE practice (on-call, incident response, SLOs/SLIs). - Drive adoption of infrastructure best practices such as GitOps, Infrastructure as Code, and security. - Partner with product to help shape and define requirements for upcoming projects. - Communicate technical direction and priorities clearly with leads, engineers, leadership, and stakeholders. - Work closely with other engineering leaders to ensure seamless platform experiences. How We’ll Know You’re Succeeding (The 12-Month View) - In Your First 30 Days: You will have gotten a clear picture of the State of the Union of the Infrastructure organization and platform – including direct time with each Engineering Team Lead and their teams. Based on this insight, you will have formed strong opinions and a concrete plan on how to best work with the leads and leadership going forward. - In Your First 90 Days: You will have made a significant impact in your role. This will include having influenced and potentially restructured the organization’s processes, identified key pain points the teams are experiencing, and communicated these clearly with all stakeholders. At this point, you will have also begun actively working on talent retention, development, and acquisition initiatives across the organization. - In Your First 12 Months: You will have taken clear, decisive ownership of the Infrastructure engineering organization, including its SRE practice. You will have successfully put clear, effective processes in place for the organization to succeed, and developed your Engineering Team Leads into stronger leaders in their own right. Qualifications - 6+ years experience leading infrastructure engineering organizations, including experience managing other engineering managers or team leads (manager-of-managers experience). - Deep understanding of what people – and the leaders responsible for them – need to do their best work. - Familiarity with Site Reliability Engineering practices: on-call design, incident response, and reliability/availability frameworks (SLOs/SLIs). - Strong working knowledge of Kubernetes in production environments. - Familiarity with the operator pattern (Go). - Strong understanding of AWS services, including EKS, VPC/networking fundamentals, and IAM and security architecture. - Experience running large-scale distributed systems with high availability. - Strong background in Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CDK, or similar). - Strong communication and leadership skills – able to align teams and leaders, unblock engineers, and move projects forward. Benefits - Small tight-knit team where every developer counts. - Fully remote and globally distributed working environment. - Option to attend Laracon conferences around the world. - Health care plan (Medical, Dental & Vision). - Paid time off (Vacation, Sick & Public holidays). - Family leave (Maternity, Paternity). - Pension plans (as locally applicable). - Performance based bonus plan. - Company equity.
