Nurse Specialist – Clinical Denials and Appeals
Huron
• Responsible for reviewing the claims denied and carrying out the appeals process appropriately and in a timely manner • Identifies and works denials, responding to the denial reason and resubmitting any information needed to the payor • Work denials and appeals timely, evaluating the denial reason including information from the payor and payor policies, reviewing the clinical documentation, assessing options and completing next steps • Submit retro-authorizations in accordance with payor requirements in response to authorization denials • Conducts medical necessity reviews, based on denial root cause, and prepares any required clinical documentation summaries to accompany appeals. • Write and submit written appeals which include compelling arguments based on clinical documentation, third-party payer medical policies, and contract language • Document all actions taken and follow-up timely as needed related to resolving denials and appeals with third-party payers in a timely manner • Completes relevant research to assist with completing the appeals process and to stay informed on best practices and policy reforms • Complies with state and federal regulations, accreditation/compliance requirements, and Huron’s policies, including those regarding fraud and abuse, confidentiality, and HIPAA
Job Requirements
- At least 1 year of clinical appeal writing experience
- Minimum of 3-5 years acute care clinical experience in a hospital setting (Med/Surg, or similar preferred); 2-3 years if ICU experience
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing
- Must be Registered Nurse with an active USRN license
- Proficiency in using InterQual or MCG clinical guidelines
- Broad Knowledge of U.S. Government Programs and Insurance Regulations
- Proficiency with hospital-based electronic medical records (EMR) such as Epic, Cerner, or Meditech
- Case management or clinical appeals or clinical denials certification (ACMA) is preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint)

• Assist customers (both virtually and onsite) in the clinical environment by educating patients and clinicians, directing care, and conducting trials to support clinical application of our orthotic products and fitting techniques. • Develop broad-based technical and clinical knowledge & experience with our Ottobock orthotic portfolio to educate our customers on fitting indications and procedures. • Support customers via phone or MS Teams with product troubleshooting measures. • Assist with patient care activities & manage complex fittings via strategic visits (onsite and virtual) with our customers. • Collaborate with our Education Team to develop and deliver educational curriculum, including online education, live webinars, onsite clinical seminars, regional trainings at remote locations, as well as technical presentations and workshops at various professional association meetings and our NA headquarters in Austin, TX. • Train and onboard internal Territory Sales Managers on product features and functions to outline a successful sales strategy in the field. • Provide internal education and clinical expertise for our Reimbursement, Technical Support and Customer Service Departments • Act as a liaison for information transfer between customers and Professional Clinical Services, Marketing, Sales, and Product Management Departments. This includes technical input for current or future orthotic development projects. • Provide technical support to our custom fabrication department as needed • Create technical and clinical resources, articles, or other professional documents for various Ottobock products and fitting techniques for internal and external use, publication, etc.
- Conduct on-site training sessions on software, hardware, and associated products, ensuring effective communication with relevant stakeholders. - Assists in managing the customer’s clinical expectations. - As available, provides competitive product performance information to headquarters, marketing, or engineering groups. - May coordinate or lead customer and/or employee training courses. - May conduct large group presentations at seminars, training programs, and trade shows. - May provide demo support to local, regional, and national customer trade events. - Formulates complementary support training information in the form of quick tips, workbooks, video media, and implementation guides. - Works with cross-functional teams as necessary to support and enable best services and optimize customer relations. - Creating and maintaining formal customer training support documents. - Designing and overseeing the initial and ongoing training for Clinical Applications Specialists, as well as continued training for new product releases. - Other duties as assigned by Training Operations and/or Applications Manager.
