Senior Protection and Controls Engineer
EC Source Services, LLC
• Design and develop protection, control, and communication systems for high-voltage substations and transmission/distribution projects. • Prepare engineering design packages, including one-line and three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, and bills of materials. • Develop relay protection schemes and coordinate settings for various system configurations. • Create and review logic diagrams, functional control drawings, and SCADA I/O lists. • Perform calculations and studies to ensure system reliability, selectivity, and coordination. • Coordinate with substation physical design, relay settings, telecommunications, and other project teams to ensure cohesive and accurate designs. • Provide technical support during project construction, commissioning, and troubleshooting phases. • Ensure compliance with industry standards, client requirements, and company QA/QC processes. • Participate in project meetings and site visits to gather field data and verify design implementation. • Review vendor drawings and specifications for relays, RTUs, control panels, and related equipment. • Support the development of cost estimates, project proposals, and schedules for protection and controls projects. • Mentor junior engineers, technicians, and drafters, providing technical guidance and quality reviews.
Job Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field (Power Systems focus preferred)
- 5+ years of experience in protection and controls design for high-voltage substations or transmission/distribution systems (experience range can be adjusted to your needs)
- Strong understanding of protective relaying principles, control systems, and substation automation
- Experience developing one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, and related documentation
- Proficiency with protective relay coordination and settings, SCADA systems, and communication protocols (DNP3, IEC 61850, Modbus, etc.)
- Familiarity with industry standards such as IEEE, NESC, NEMA, and ANSI
- Experience using AutoCAD, MicroStation, or other electrical design tools
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with a high attention to detail
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) license or eligibility for future licensure preferred
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deliver quality results within schedule and budget constraints.
