Tax Manager

DMA - DuCharme, McMillen & Associates

• Responsible for reviewing and analyzing client royalty obligations to identify tax savings opportunities and ensure compliance with applicable regulations. • Prepares detailed reviews of client royalty reporting, and represents clients in audits with taxing authorities. • Maintains expert knowledge of royalty assessment laws and industry practices to deliver accurate, strategic solutions that optimize client outcomes. • Reviews client records for Crown royalty refund potential, credits, and procedural recommendations. • Prepares and submits written reports supporting DMA’s position for taxing authorities; reviews and submits periodic status reports to clients; prepares Report of Findings for clients. • Responsible for client account management on assigned clients. • Maintains knowledge of Crown Royalty regulations, guidelines and court decisions. • Represents clients during Alberta Treasury Board and Finance audits and provides support and advisory services in defense of claims made. • Assists Director National Accounts and other business development professionals in scoping and developing customized solutions for new and prospective clients. • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, Economics, or a related field required.
  • 5-7 years’ prior experience in Crown royalty reporting (GCA, oil sands, freehold and override royalties), with specific experience in oil and gas properties.
  • CPA designation or equivalent desired.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills.
  • Self-starter who can function independently and in a team environment.
  • Some overnight travel may be required.

Role Description The Indirect Tax Manager will manage the sales and use and property tax compliance process and assist in all aspects of planning and sales tax audit matters for indirect taxes. This is a unique role that partners with corporate and business unit teams during the estimating, contracting, and invoicing processes and is considered an essential strategic contributor to the business. This role is fully remote. Specific location details and expectations will be discussed during the interview process. Position Responsibilities and Duties - Compliance & Reporting - Support the preparation, review, and timely filing of indirect tax returns (sales & use tax, withholding taxes related to indirect tax, property taxes, etc.) - Ensure correct tax treatment of construction contracts, including long-term contracts, percentage of completion billing, advance payments/deposits, and change orders - Monitor compliance across multiple jurisdictions, sites, and project entities - Maintain accurate indirect tax accounting and reconciliations - Contract Advisory & Project Support - Advise project, procurement, and commercial teams on indirect tax implications of construction contracts, operation & maintenance agreements, and subcontracting arrangements - Review contract language for appropriate sales tax treatment and ensure appropriate protections based on tax responsibilities of the parties - Assist in validating data and proper calculation and collection of sales tax in all states utilizing third-party tools such as Avalara - Review project estimates for sales and use tax implications - Analyze state and local taxability by project and contract - Tax Technical Research & Analysis - Perform tax technical research related to sales and use tax and other indirect tax matters - Document tax research, analysis and conclusions - Effectively communicate tax positions to business and operations teams - Develop internal tax policy documents - Risk Management & Audits - Manage indirect tax audits and inquiries from tax authorities, as assigned - Identify, assess, and mitigate indirect tax risks related to construction projects - Implement internal controls and processes to ensure consistent tax treatment across projects - Process Improvement & Systems - Improve sales and use tax determination and accrual processes within ERP and procurement systems - Maintain exemption certificate management processes and documentation - Support implementation and optimization of tax engines (e.g., Vertex, Avalara) where applicable - Build automation and digitalization tools where possible - Stakeholder Management - Train and support finance, procurement, and project teams on indirect tax awareness and compliance - Collaborate closely with finance, legal, and operations teams - Timely and responsive communications with stakeholders Qualifications - B.S in Accounting, Finance, Tax, or Law (MS, JD, or CPA preferred) - 10+ years of indirect tax experience, ideally within construction, engineering, or renewables - Strong knowledge of construction-specific tax issues (e.g., mixed supplies, cost-plus contracts, subcontractor taxation) - Experience handling indirect tax audits and working with tax authorities - Familiarity with ERP systems - Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills - Ability to interpret complex construction contracts and translate them into correct tax treatment - Excellent and timely communication and stakeholder management skills - Customer service approach to internal stakeholders and external project owners - Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple competing project priorities with frequent communication/updates - Proactive and self-motivated work ethic and can operate independently and within a team with minimal supervision - Strategic, commercial mindset with a focus on risk management and value creation - Adaptability to change and shifting priorities - Ability to effectively explain tax technical concepts to non-tax teams Requirements - Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. without requiring employer sponsorship now or in the future.
