Structural Engineer – Substation

Olsson

• Perform and lead structural design for substation facilities, including foundations, steel structures, equipment supports, and miscellaneous structural components. • Support projects through all phases including conceptual design, detailed engineering, permitting support, and construction administration. • Work closely with electrical engineers, designers, and other disciplines to ensure coordinated, constructible designs. • Provide technical guidance and review of designs prepared by junior engineers and designers. • Participate in client meetings, respond to contractor RFIs, and provide construction support as needed, including limited travel to project sites.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering (structural emphasis).
  • 6+ years of progressive structural engineering experience, preferably including substation or industrial facilities.
  • Experience designing concrete foundations and structural steel systems.
  • Working knowledge of relevant codes and standards (ACI, AISC, IBC, ASCE).
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure preferred or ability to obtain within a reasonable timeframe.

Role Description Dawson Civil is looking for an experienced Estimator who will skillfully assess costs, collaborate with stakeholders and partners, and leverage industry expertise to deliver precise and competitive estimates. In this role you will be a valued member of Dawson Civil, working in a permanent, full-time position of Estimator, reporting to the Manager Operations. Your base location will be Kamloops, BC and will require travel throughout our great province. - Prepare a comprehensive project cost estimate including; labour, equipment, materials, safety, subcontractors, overhead, taxes, insurance, and mark-up. - Review drawings and understand the contract documents of each tender. - Visit the jobsite to gather information on access, topography, drainage, power supply, material sources, haul times, existing conditions or services, water source and other specifics as required. - Perform accurate quantity takeoffs and estimate the cost of materials, labour, equipment, and subcontractor's work, ensuring all areas have been accounted for prior to submitting tenders. - Analyze quotes made by subcontractors for completeness, competitive pricing, ability to perform, and scheduling restraints. - Assess equipment needs, operations sequence, crew size, and site constraints. - Manage the cost, negotiation and settlement of change orders and mitigate potential claims during construction in conjunction with the lead Project Manager. Qualifications - Engineering Degree or Civil Engineering Technical diploma; or an equivalent combination of education, technical training and/or related industry experience. - Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in the construction industry. - Minimum of five (5) years of experience in cost estimating. - Proven ability in using estimating software, preferably HCSS.
