Job Description

Payroll Specialist

Upstart

• Process full cycle US domestic payroll biweekly and semi monthly • Monitor and manage the time tracking system for non-exempt employees, ensuring all timecards are complete and approved ahead of payroll processing. • Prepare and audit all payroll data including new hires, salary changes, commissions, benefits and all other payroll related items received from stakeholders • Assist with payroll compliance matters such as multi-state tax withholding, garnishments and annual audits • Prepare and process equity events including RSU, NSO, ISO, and ESPP transactions • Manage and respond to payroll inquiries within SLA timeframes

Job Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience with US Domestic payroll processing and timekeeping
  • Solid understanding of payroll operations including reconciliations, SOX controls, wage types and their impact on taxation/W2
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Willingness to learn, perform and succeed in a high-growth environment
  • Ability to multitask, manage time and accept changing priorities

Role Description We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Payroll Tax Accountant to join our finance team. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing payroll tax compliance, payroll reconciliations, and reporting processes while ensuring accuracy and adherence to federal, state, and local regulations. This role requires strong experience with both Sage and QuickBooks, as well as a solid understanding of payroll accounting principles and tax legislation. Duties & Responsibilities - Process and review payroll transactions to ensure accuracy and compliance. - Prepare, reconcile, and submit payroll tax filings, including federal, state, and local taxes. - Maintain payroll records and ensure compliance with relevant tax laws and regulations. - Reconcile payroll-related general ledger accounts on a monthly basis. - Manage payroll tax registrations, notices, audits, and correspondence with tax authorities. - Prepare and submit year-end payroll reports and other statutory filings where applicable. - Investigate and resolve payroll discrepancies, tax variances, and employee payroll queries. - Assist with month-end and year-end accounting processes related to payroll. - Generate payroll reports and provide analysis to management as required. - Ensure accurate employee deductions, benefits, garnishments, and tax withholdings. - Collaborate with HR and Finance teams to maintain employee and payroll data integrity. - Stay informed of changes in payroll tax legislation and recommend process improvements. Qualifications - Bachelor's degree or diploma in Accounting, Finance, Payroll Administration, or a related field. - Minimum 3+ years of payroll accounting and payroll tax experience. - Strong working knowledge of payroll tax regulations and compliance requirements. - Hands-on experience with Sage Payroll and QuickBooks. - Experience preparing payroll tax filings and reconciliations. - Strong understanding of payroll accounting entries and general ledger reconciliations. - Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including formulas, pivot tables, and data analysis. - Excellent attention to detail and high level of accuracy. - Strong problem-solving and organizational skills. - Ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
