• This role has variety at its core. From facilitating client meetings to overseeing monthly and yearly financial closes, no day will be a typical day. • You will be supporting our startup clients who need Controller expertise at their growth stage (usually we work with Seed through Series C clients). So, there is always a lot of work to be done! • You’ll be working with a variety of clients, so the ability to context shift, communicate, prioritize, and evaluate needs is the most important thing you’ll be doing in this role. • You’ll be managing accountants and processes for our clients and possibly internally to Burkland, too, so you’ll want to have a background in management. • Embracing the agile and scrappy nature of startups is a must.
Job Requirements
- You have a Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, finance, or something similar.
- Over 5 years of progressive experience.
- CPA or CMA is a bonus.
- Building and Overseeing Accounting Processes for Full Cycle Accounting.
- Financial Statement Analysis.
- Chart of Accounts Review and Recommendations for Grant Accounting.
- Cost of Goods Sold Guidance.
- Performing accounting and grants compliance tasks, including invoicing, cash applications, accounting research, and grants administration.
- Establishing and maintaining trusted partnerships with clients.
- Translating complex accounting topics to actionable data for clients.
- Coaching junior team members.
- Preparation of Financial Statements, Reports and Presentations.
- Accounting for Intercompany Activity and Performing Financial Statement Consolidations.
- Accounting for Unrealized Gains and Losses.
- Familiarity with Equity Accounting and Reconciliations for Stock, and Convertible Notes.
- Advanced knowledge of ASC 606 - Revenue Recognition and ASC 842 - Lease Accounting.
- Reviewing the work of others and designing plan to resolve errors.
- Knowledge of the Financial Due Diligence Process.
- Accounting for Grants and Government Contracts.
- Segregation of Direct and Indirect Costs, Allowable and Unallowable.
- DCAA Compliance for Pre and Post Award.

The compensation range for this role is market driven, with a salary range of $190,000 - $240,000. Additionally, we offer a robust benefits package. Specific Responsibilities Manage all general accounting functions which includes performing month-end close process, eliminations & consolidations, preparing and booking journal entries, account reconciliations and variance analysis all in compliance with GAAP. Responsible for AP/AR, Payroll, GL, Cash, Tax and financial reporting functions, managing internal staff and consultants to streamline processes. Partner with CFO on budgeting, forecasting, and strategic planning initiatives. Oversee financial reporting to executive leadership, the board of directors and external stakeholders, providing clear insights into financial performance and business trends Develop and maintain policies to ensure accurate accounting, financial reporting and reliable internal controls; ensure financial integrity through strong controls. Manage annual accounting audits, tax audits, sales & use tax submissions and ad-hoc financial requests and reporting.
