Senior Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET)

About ECP ECP is a market-leading SaaS solution that enables senior living communities to better care for their residents. ECP is used in over 8,000 communities around the world. We're actively expanding the number of customers using our software, and better servicing existing customers by developing and releasing new products. About the Role We're seeking a Senior Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) to scale our test infrastructure across our engineering organization. You'll play a dual role: building robust test frameworks in CI/CD pipelines, while writing and automating comprehensive tests that set the standard for quality across our products. Working across multiple product teams with diverse tech stacks, from modern React/Node.js applications to legacy systems undergoing modernization, you'll design and implement scalable solutions to complex automated testing challenges, such as browser-level cross-product testing, database migrations, and API integrations. The ideal candidate will be a force multiplier whose infrastructure work will accelerate dev teams’ own test automation, while leading by example through the high-value, complex tests you write yourself. What You'll Do Build Testing Infrastructure & Architecture (40%) - Design and implement comprehensive testing frameworks across ECP's product portfolio (React, Node.js, ColdFusion/Lucee, and legacy systems) - Build custom tooling for testing complex scenarios: browser-level application testing, API integrations, database migrations, cross-product workflows, and offline-capable applications - Use modern test tools (Playwright, Jest, Cypress, Testing Library) and AI tools to accelerate test development - Create reusable test libraries and utilities that work across different tech stacks - Architect and optimize CI/CD testing pipelines for fast feedback (<15 minute test runs) with quality gates Write and Automate High-Value Tests (40%) - Develop comprehensive test suites for modern web apps, legacy system integrations, API services, and database operations - Develop the hard tests that require deep expertise: race conditions, timing issues, cross-system integrations, and data consistency edge cases - Build integration and E2E test suites for critical user workflows Enable & Mentor Engineering Teams (20%) - Train engineers across the organization in automated testing methodologies - Create exemplar tests that demonstrate best practices for development teams to follow - Review test automation code written by other engineers, providing constructive feedback - Evangelize testing standards, coverage requirements, and quality metrics - Collaborate with product and engineering teams to identify test requirements early - Contribute to building a culture of quality
Job Requirements
- Requirements
- 7+ years of professional automated testing software development experience
- Expert-level programming skills in JavaScript/TypeScript—you write production-quality code
- Proven experience building testing infrastructure from scratch: frameworks, CI/CD integration, custom tooling
- Deep expertise with modern test tools: Playwright, Cypress, Jest, React Testing Library, or similar
- Strong understanding of software architecture and how to design maintainable, scalable test frameworks
- Experience testing both modern and legacy systems, including database-heavy applications and API integrations
- Experience with RESTful APIs, SQL databases (SQL Server, PostgreSQL), and backend testing
- Excellent debugging and troubleshooting skills for complex technical issues and flaky tests
- Strong communication and mentoring abilities—you can explain testing concepts clearly and teach others
- Experience working in Agile/Scrum with continuous integration and deployment
- Legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship
- Preferred Qualifications
- Experience testing diverse tech stacks including React, Node.js, ColdFusion/Lucee, or other backend frameworks
- Experience with database testing and migrations across different database systems (SQL Server, PostgreSQL), particularly related to sensitive personally identifiable information
- Experience testing offline-capable applications
- Experience with API contract testing, visual regression testing, or accessibility testing
- Familiarity with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP)
- Experience with CI/CD tools including GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, or Jenkins
- Background in testing legacy system modernization or incremental migration projects
- Experience with healthcare software or understanding of FHIR/HL7 standards is a plus
- Comfort using AI coding tools (Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor) to accelerate test development

The Team The Engagement team at Upstart is responsible for building compelling, high-impact product experiences that help users better understand and improve their financial health.
