Role Description Serve as principal legal counsel to the County Attorney on civil matters, board counsel to the Travis County Commissioners Court, and directly oversees the civil division of the County Attorney’s Office which includes approximately 40 attorneys and 50 support staff. - Directs the day-to-day operations of the divisions and functions within a comprehensive and complex legal office. - Provides executive leadership, management and coordination. - Plans and develops policies, procedures and programs. - Oversees interdepartmental, intergovernmental and public/private coordination concerning operations and activities. - Works closely with elected officials and policy-making bodies and provides management support, legal counsel and advice to department attorneys. - Directs activities through subordinate division directors. Qualifications - J.D./LL.B. from an accredited law school. - Ten (10) years licensed attorney work experience in diverse civil/criminal matters. - Five (5) years of mid- to senior level supervisory or management experience. Requirements - Licensed to practice law in the State of Texas. - Ten (10) plus years of management experience (preferred). Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities - Knowledge of management and supervisory principles, practices and techniques. - Knowledge of jurisprudence, criminal and civil law and procedures, including constitutional and statutory law. - Knowledge of federal, state, local and county applicable laws, rules, regulations and guidelines. - Knowledge of methods and practices of pleading cases and effective techniques for presentation of cases in Court. - Knowledge of accounting, purchasing and budgetary theory, principles and practices. - Knowledge of investigative techniques. - Knowledge of computer equipment, including word processing, spreadsheets, databases and a variety of software packages. - Skill in supervising others, allocating resources and evaluating programs. - Skill in problem-solving and decision-making. - Ability to motivate, train, supervise and develop attorneys and support staff. - Ability to analyze and appraise facts, procedures, and legal precedents affecting complex Court cases. - Ability to conduct legal research and analysis, both manually and electronically. - Ability to present facts, precedents and arguments verbally and in writing and apply negotiation skills. - Ability to work independently and efficiently. - Ability to manage time well, perform multiple tasks and organize diverse activities. - Ability to work well under pressure and exercise tact in trying situations. - Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with departmental clientele, representatives of outside agencies, other County employees and officials, and the general public. • Lead the decision-making process and implementation of invention disclosure harvesting, patent application drafting, prosecution, subsequent filing decisions, portfolio pruning and portfolio IP strategy, working closely with ABB inventors, technology leaders and outside IP counsel. • Provide support for trademark prosecution, enforcement, and portfolio strategy including brand protection initiatives. Counsel business stakeholders on brand protection initiatives. • Draft, negotiate and advise on a variety of IP related agreements and clauses regarding IP ownership, IP indemnity and more, in general business transactions as well as strategic partnerships, university partnerships, joint development, licensing, software licensing. • Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams of ABB (e.g., General Legal, product management, sales, marketing, business IP coordinators) to jointly provide optimal IP services to business stakeholders. • Communicate with business stakeholders ensuring accuracy of complex IP data, strong presentation skills and strong relationship skills with business partners. • Provide training to the business community as needed, on a variety of IP topics.
