Job Description

Staff Software Engineer (Ruby on Rails)

CompanyCam

Hi, we’re CompanyCam. We’re a simple-to-use photo documentation and productivity app for contractors of all commercial and home services industries. Packed with intuitive functionality, CompanyCam facilitates unparalleled communication and accountability across a contractor’s entire business. We’re committed to providing a consumer-grade, game-changing experience that helps our users build trust within their company and with their customers. But don’t let that corporate description fool you—the people behind our buttoned-up product are laid-back (but hardworking), genuine, and kickass, and you could be one of them! The Role We're looking for an experienced, thoughtful, and impact-driven Staff Software Engineer (Ruby on Rails) to work within the Core Experience Org, to provide technical leadership across CompanyCam's engineering organization. As a Staff Software Engineer, your impact goes well beyond a single team. You'll serve as a consolidated go-to for architectural review and mentorship across five product teams — owning the features and systems that sit at the heart of what CompanyCam does: the camera pipeline, checklists, project pages, notifications, search, documents, and more. These are heavily utilized, high-traffic features, and we need someone who thinks deeply about what that means at scale. While you'll continue to contribute directly to code, your primary focus will be on technical direction, architectural decision-making, and raising the bar for how we build backend systems. You'll float across teams where support is needed, get ahead of technical problems before they surface, and be a trusted resource for the senior engineers doing the day-to-day work. Most importantly, you'll play a key role in evolving our engineering culture, practices, and systems as we scale, helping us make better decisions, reduce risk, and invest wisely in our platform, developer experience, and people. Working At CompanyCam Our engineering team is remote-first, spanning every time zone in the United States. We welcome people from all backgrounds and really don't care whether or not you have a CS degree or even a high school diploma. All that matters is that you're not an a**hole and you're good at what you do. At CompanyCam we’re driven to produce work with meaningful outcomes. That means not just dumping features and “improvements” but being able to reflect and learn from our outputs. We’re actively working to center our work on continuous discovery habits (CDH) as outlined by Teresa Torres. Our teams are made up of a product manager, a product designer, a tech lead and an appropriate number of engineers for the scope of your team. Rather than being overly prescriptive, we provide guardrails and just enough constraints to keep teams moving. Each team is expected to collaborate, iterate, and refine their best practices to produce high-quality work. What You’ll Do - Provide technical leadership and architectural guidance across five Core product teams, serving as the primary backend staff engineer for this area of the product. - Float across teams where support is needed: stepping in on high-priority projects, unblocking engineers, and ensuring work gets over the line without dropping the thread on your broader responsibilities. - Design, evolve, and support backend systems and architecture primarily in Ruby on Rails, PostgreSQL, REST, and related technologies, with a focus on performance and reliability at scale. - Get ahead of technical problems — proactively identifying, forecasting, and mitigating risk before it becomes someone else's emergency. - Ensure strong observability across Core systems, including Datadog dashboards, monitoring, and alerting. - Influence long-term technical strategy, balancing short-term delivery with platform health, scalability, and sustainability. - Create clarity around technical decisions, trade-offs, and direction in ambiguous or high-impact situations. - Set and uphold high standards for code quality, security, privacy, observability, and documentation through direct contribution, review, and mentorship. - Mentor senior backend engineers and, over time, help frontend-focused engineers build stronger Ruby on Rails skills. - Act as a force multiplier, enabling teams and individuals without overshadowing or sidelining others. What You’ll Bring Must-haves These are our non-negotiables: - Show up: Have the courage to do difficult but necessary work. - Grow up: Take ownership, learn continuously, and bring a growth mindset. - Do good: Treat your teammates and customers the way you'd want to be treated. - Extensive professional experience building and leading software systems (typically 15+ years, but we value impact over years). - Deep, hands-on proficiency in Ruby on Rails (minimum 7 years) - Strong object-oriented programming fundamentals and backend system design. - Experience designing and operating systems using PostgreSQL and REST APIs in high-traffic production environments. - Familiarity with cloud-hosted infrastructure, including AWS. - Strong independent judgment and the ability to navigate complex, ambiguous problems proactively, not reactively. - Ability to communicate technical ideas clearly and empathetically to a wide range of audiences, including product managers, designers, and non-technical partners. - Demonstrated experience mentoring engineers and influencing technical decisions across teams. - You share context freely, create clarity, and build trust — hoarding information is a non-starter here. - You live and work permanently in the U.S. (We're not set up to hire outside the U.S.). Nice-to-haves You’ll encounter the following technologies and concepts with varying frequency — experience with them is a plus, but not required: - AWS (S3, EC2, etc.) - Observability and monitoring systems - Datadog and database design at scale - Infrastructure as Code - Feature flagging systems - GraphQL - React - React Native - Experience evaluating or integrating AI / LLM-powered tools and systems Benefits and Compensation This is a salaried position at CompanyCam. Our salary range is $190,000 - $210,000 per year and is based on experience. We also offer meaningful equity and other benefits. CompanyCam is an equal-opportunity employer committed to respect, inclusion, and growth. We work hard, take responsibility, and support each other. Great ideas come from all backgrounds, and we carefully consider every applicant without regard to personal characteristics or traits. Even if your work experience doesn’t align perfectly, we encourage you to apply. What really matters to us is your potential, your passion, and your commitment to learning, innovation, and contributing meaningfully to our team. For any accommodations or technical issues related to the online application or interview process, please email jobs@companycam.com and we’ll respond promptly. Please do not include any medical or health information in your message. Note: Resumes sent to this email will not be reviewed or responded to. To be considered for a position, you must apply directly through our careers page.
