Overview The Development Manager leads and empowers a team of front-end and back-end engineers, serving as the operational and people leadership backbone of the engineering department. This role bridges hands-on team management with cross-functional collaboration, owning the health of engineering processes, tooling, and talent while ensuring engineers are set up to deliver high-quality work across complex eCommerce engagements. The Development Manager partners closely with the Engineering Director to scale the department, drive continuous improvement, and represent the needs of the engineering team across the broader organization. They are a player-coach who leads by example, fostering a culture of accountability, curiosity, and cross-disciplinary collaboration. Responsibilities People Leadership & Development - Directly manages a team of front-end and back-end engineers, providing coaching, performance feedback, career development planning, and day-to-day support - Conducts regular 1:1s, performance reviews, and goal-setting conversations to develop individual contributors and build team capability - Provides real-time support on technical challenges, delivery escalations, and interpersonal dynamics within the team - Drives recruiting, hiring, and onboarding of engineering team members - Builds a team culture rooted in collaboration, ownership, and continuous learning Identifies skill gaps and partners with the Engineering Director on training and development strategies Cross-Functional Collaboration - Serves as the engineering team's primary connector to PMO, UX, and account functions, ensuring alignment across disciplines - Encourages and facilitates cross-functional knowledge sharing between front-end, back-end, and QA engineers - Partners with project and program managers to align engineering workflows with delivery milestones and client expectations - Represents the engineering team in cross-departmental meetings and leadership discussions - Supports lead developers with seamless handoffs between solution scoping and technical delivery Tooling & Systems - Evaluates, implements, and maintains the tools and systems that support the engineering team across the development lifecycle - Monitors tooling effectiveness and advocates for investments that improve team efficiency and technical output quality - Ensures the adoption of development tools, project management integrations, and internal platforms - Stays current on emerging tools and technologies relevant to the agency's technical stack and client needs - Partners with the Engineering Director & IT Manager on tooling strategy and org-wide systems decisions - Maintain expertise in Shopify’s product roadmap and technical ecosystem, including enterprise-grade integrations such as ERP, PIM, CRM, and OMS. Engineering Director Support - Acts as a strategic partner and operational right-hand to the Engineering Director, helping to execute on departmental goals and initiatives - Manages escalations, leads team-level initiatives, and drives alignment across engineering and adjacent teams as needed - Represents team capacity, morale, and development needs in leadership conversations - Contributes to departmental planning including headcount, resource allocation, and technical roadmapping - Steps into leadership gaps and supports broader organizational priorities as directed Requirements - Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field; equivalent experience considered 5+ years of engineering experience with at least 5 years in a people management or team lead capacity - Proven experience managing both front-end and back-end engineers - Demonstrated success driving process improvement and engineering standardization initiatives Experience with capacity planning, resource management, and technical roadmapping - Strong people leadership skills including hiring, coaching, performance management, and team development - Ability to balance strategic thinking with day-to-day operational execution - Exceptional communication skills across written, verbal, and collaborative formats - Proven ability to manage ambiguity, build alignment, and lead through influence Skills - Strong understanding of modern web development practices including front-end and back-end engineering disciplines - Well versed in platform integrations involving strong data management and manipulation - Experience managing or leading engineering teams in an agency or enterprise environment - Demonstrated ability to build cross-functional relationships and work across disciplines - Familiarity with eCommerce platforms, preferably Shopify or Shopify Plus Experience owning or improving engineering processes and delivery workflows - Comfortable evaluating and implementing tools across the development lifecycle - Strong communicator with the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders The duties and responsibilities described here are not a comprehensive list and the scope of the job may change as necessitated by business demands.
