Code for America is looking for a talented Staff DevOps Engineer who will play a critical role in transforming compliance from a constraint into an operational strength. Through hands-on execution across cloud infrastructure, CI/CD, and monitoring, you ensure that security, availability, and data integrity are built into the platform by default. This work allows civic programs to scale responsibly while maintaining public trust. About the role: We’re seeking an experienced Staff DevOps Engineer to help design, automate, and scale secure, compliant cloud infrastructure supporting containerized and AI-powered applications. The ideal candidate thrives in fast-paced, compliance-driven environments (SOC 2, HIPAA, or similar) and is passionate about Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC), CI/CD, and enabling developer velocity through automation and best practices. This role will report to the Director of Product Engineering and is expected to travel no more than 10% of the time. This is a full-time, term-limited position for 1 year. Code for America is based in California and can employ those who reside full-time within the United States. This is a remote position. In this position you will: - Develop and optimize CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions for secure, automated deployments - Implement, maintain, and monitor containerized applications (Docker, Kubernetes, ECS, or EKS) - Collaborate closely with engineering and security teams to ensure compliance with frameworks such as SOC 2, HIPAA, and NIST 800-53 - Automate cloud resource provisioning, scaling, and governance with reusable modules and policy-as-code - Manage and monitor infrastructure for performance, reliability, and cost optimization - Contribute to and enforce secure DevOps best practices (least privilege, secrets management, audit logging, vulnerability scanning) - Support platform integration for AI/ML workloads, container orchestration, and environment isolation - Other duties as assigned About you: The position is a perfect fit if you are someone who likes to document, teach, and design for reuse, with a strong passion for building systems that are reliable, accessible, and worthy of trust. You’re someone who likes to get your hands dirty while also thinking about how today’s solutions become tomorrow’s foundations. - 3–5+ years of hands-on DevOps, SRE, or infrastructure engineering experience - Deep experience with AWS (CloudFormation, IAM, ECS/EKS, Lambda, CloudWatch, S3, VPC, RDS) - Strong communication, documentation, and collaboration skills in matrixed organizations - Familiarity with Azure or Google Cloud Platform (GCP) a plus - Proficient in GitHub Actions, Docker, and Kubernetes It’s a bonus if you have: - Aptible (deployment or compliance automation experience) - AI/ML infrastructure (GPU orchestration, model serving, or AI workflows) - Scripting in Ruby, Python, Bash, or Go for automation and tool development What you’ll get - Salary: Code for America’s salary bands are transparent as a part of our commitment to transparency and fairness. As part of our hiring practices, we aim to target the midpoint of the 2nd quartile of the range for all new hires. Offer targets vary based on market / geographic location. The offer targets for this role range from $128,945 to $157,850, annually.
