Legal Counsel, Artificial Intelligence, Data Innovation

Stryker

• Advise on the legal, ethical, and IP implications of AI/ML model development and deployment. • Provide legal guidance on algorithmic transparency, explainability, model lifecycle management, and fairness audits. • Support legal reviews for vendor engagement, data training sets, and co-development of AI-powered tools. • Counsel on cross-border data flows, data labeling, retention, and re-use for AI applications. • Partner with Privacy and Digital Health to align AI projects with global data protection and regulatory requirements. • Monitor emerging AI legislation (e.g., EU AI Act, U.S. Executive Orders, industry guidelines) and translate developments into policy recommendations. • Provide legal counsel on the deployment of AI/ML technologies, including: Vendor engagement and IP ownership Fairness, transparency, and explainability standards Risk mitigation strategies for regulated medical and enterprise use. • Advise on enterprise productivity platforms with a focus on licensing, interoperability, data handling, and user compliance. • Partner with other members of the legal team (commercial, regulatory, IP, data governance & privacy) to coordinate and align on all issues concerning AI, such as: AI model training using sensitive data Cross-border data flows and platform integrations Retention, access controls, and auditability in collaboration tools.

Job Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) with license to practice in at least one jurisdiction.
  • Minimum 10 years applicable professional experience in law firm or corporate legal department setting with demonstrated experience and a strong interest or focus in AI/ML, data science, or emerging technologies.
  • Prior professional experience considered; medical device, pharmaceutical, life sciences experience strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of intellectual property, data protection, and regulatory frameworks relevant to AI innovation.
  • Exposure to algorithmic governance, model validation, or ethics in tech is a plus.
  • Excellent research, risk-spotting, and cross-functional communication skills.

You will report to the Vice President – Head of Legal and work closely with other members of the legal team as well as cross-functionally with other internal stakeholders, including sales, vendors, infosec, and human resources.
