• Own initiative areas end-to-end — from recruiting founders and designing organizations to commissioning products and running fellowships — in service of steering transformative technology toward benefiting humanity. • This role reports to FLF’s Chief Operating Officer. • FLF’s mission is to steer transformative technology towards benefiting life and away from extreme large-scale risks. FLF researches which organizations, projects, or fields would be most useful in steering technology towards benefiting humanity, and then works to help establish those structures. We do whatever it takes to get impactful structures established — such as headhunting leaders, commissioning products, running fellowships, and incubating new organizations. Our vision is that each Project Development Lead (PDL) owns one or more initiative areas (such as AI-facilitated coordination, epistemic evaluations, or epistemic provenance infrastructure) and is responsible for setting the strategic plan and executing within that area — including activities such as founder selection, org design, and product scoping. FLF has dedicated strategic staff and has done substantial work on prioritization across initiatives, so this role focuses on driving impact within your assigned areas rather than on cross-initiative strategy. • We’re hiring 2–3+ PDLs simultaneously to significantly expand our execution capacity. This is a moment of growth for FLF, and these roles will shape the next generation of our work.

• Conduct structured horizon-scanning for novel AI-enabled hazard classes, and develop methodologies for reasoning rigorously about threats that lack historical base rates or established scientific communities • Investigate next-generation detection sciences, such as dynamic and adaptive pathogen surveillance, and analogous open-ended approaches for other emerging hazard modalities • Pursue feasibility analyses on deep resilience and lifeline capacities engineered to function when conventional infrastructure, sunlight, or centralized coordination cannot be assumed • Analyze biosphere-scale vulnerabilities, including geoengineering, synthetic microbes for terraforming or remediation, and nontraditional environmental toxicology arising from AI-enabled activity • Identify and selectively advance defensive, stabilizing, and transparency-enhancing technologies whose differential acceleration favors humanity • Develop scientific metaresearch on how evidence is generated, aggregated, and translated into action where conventional empirical feedback loops are weak • Build scientific coordination capacity through standards, convenings, and cross-border working relationships, and equip frontline responders and community networks with usable decision support • Co-author grant applications, build analytical tools that make catastrophic risks more legible, and translate findings for policymakers, technical audiences, and the public • Collaborate across CARMA programs to integrate civil safety perspectives with broader risk assessment, governance, and technical safety workstreams

• Extend ontologies and knowledge graph schemas representing claims, evidence, argument structures, defeaters, and confidence • Implement defeasible argumentation frameworks (e.g., ASPIC+, Dung-style, argumentation schemes) that capture both logical structure and vulnerability to rebuttal • Operate and quality-control LLM-driven population pipelines, with cross-check scaffolds, provenance tracking, and human-in-the-loop curation • Architect agent coordination patterns for multi-step research and population tasks, with robust error handling and graceful degradation • Pre-harden argument structures by mapping the strongest counterarguments, steel-manned objections, and known defeaters • Build export pipelines that translate structured argumentation into diverse communications formats across audiences and registers • Maintain current awareness across AI safety, capabilities, and governance sufficient to know when new developments require graph updates, and to know where to find authoritative further detail • Collaborate with communications staff and researchers to ensure outputs serve real persuasive needs

• Lead legal research on possible U.S. federal and state-level policy interventions supporting public safety, security, and wellbeing for scenarios of highly multipolar AGI run amok • Research on underutilized authorities, opportunities for better communication and response, and for legal loopholes that may be filled by an action of an executive agency • Work closely with the Public Security Policy program lead to craft creative holistic solutions to projected catastrophic issues regarding public health and safety, civil rights, human rights, national security, global security, emergency preparedness, emergency management, economic stability, infrastructure security, and novel threat profiles. • Help craft holistic solution recommendations for prevention, mitigation, and/or responses to a variety of projected novel crises • Research realpolitik and judicial dynamics regarding prospective interventions

• Support our robust media relations apparatus. You'll craft press releases that actually get read, pitch stories that land, and become reporters' favorite person to hear from. This will probably be about 30% of your time. • Help take our social media presence to the next level, dreaming up posts that stop the scroll, keeping our content calendar humming, and jumping on trends before they're over. This will be about 30% of your time. • Be the glue that holds our communications operation together, partnering with designers to bring ideas to life, keeping our internal systems from descending into chaos, making sure nothing falls through the cracks, and generally being the person who makes everyone else's job easier. This will be about 30% of your time. • Take the lead on exciting earned media initiatives, support the policy team's public communications work, and generally help FLI keep the future human. This is the 'other duties as assigned' part, which will be about 10% of your time.

• Review and negotiate contracts • Manage relationships with external legal counsel • Ensure organizational compliance with nonprofit regulations and reporting requirements in the many jurisdictions we operate in • Plan and execute our bi-annual staff retreat, including venue selection, catering, and agenda support to ensure our team is able to strategize at their best • Jump in to help the wider team in whatever way is most needed
