• You own a platform domain. • You build the standards and tooling. • You make technical decisions and are accountable for adoption and outcomes. • Collaborate with engineers in product squads to co-design solutions. • Conduct 1:1s with the engineers you mentor and with Principals who mentor you. • Design reviews both for your domain and as part of the team. • Writing is vital—design docs, ADRs, and post-incident learnings. • Protect focus time for deep work and avoid unnecessary meetings. • Engage in thoughtful collaboration with team members and advocate for strategic laziness.
• You are the senior technical authority in a major platform domain. • You co-author the platform strategy. • You make the architectural decisions other teams depend on. • Collaborating with the team, you design and operate the shared services, identity foundations, developer tooling, and reliability standards that compound across every product team. • You drive simplification. The platform should get smaller, clearer and more automated over time. • Design reviews — running them, and being the second pair of eyes in reviews across the org. • 1:1s with the engineers you mentor, and with me. • Pairing with engineers in product squads on the harder technical problems. • Building! You will build a lot. • Writing — architecture decisions, design docs, agentic prompts that the whole team will use. Time with the team on the shared AI tooling that makes the whole engineering org faster. • Focus time is non-negotiable. We protect the calendar for deep work. Meetings have a purpose or they don't happen.
Role Description The Smartly Platforms and Architecture Team are looking for a Senior Product Platform Engineer to own a platform domain end-to-end and the engineers who depend on it. About the Role (your why): - You own a platform domain, which could be Identity and Access Management, Developer Experience and CI/CD, Performance and Observability, or another that fits the moment. - You set direction inside the domain, build standards and tooling, make technical decisions, and are accountable for adoption and outcomes. - Your customers are other engineers across the company, and success is measured by actual usage of what you build. What you'll do: - Design reviews — both the ones you run for your domain and the ones you sit in across the team. - 1:1s with the engineers you mentor and with the Principals who mentor you. - Pairing with engineers in product squads to co-design solutions and unblock hard technical problems. - Building — shipping new self-service capabilities, CI pipeline improvements, and instrumenting features with observability. - Writing design docs, ADRs, and agentic prompts that the whole team will use. - Focus time is non-negotiable; meetings have a purpose or they don't happen. Qualifications - You've shipped real systems and owned a domain. - You're deeply comfortable in the demanding application engineering space. - Very familiar with C# and dotnet; some knowledge of Python and TypeScript is beneficial. - Ability to thrive in a modular monolith environment. - Judgement, taste, vision, and context are essential. - Understanding of "platform as product" in practice. - Ownership of outcomes and agency in achieving goals. Requirements - Experience in application engineering. - Comfortable with making decisions that affect the codebase and domain. - Ability to listen to other engineers and care about developer experience. Benefits - Opportunity to work in a profitable company reinvesting in engineering and AI. - Focus on learning and growth with mentorship opportunities. - Remote-first work environment with respect for focus time. Company Description Smartly is profitable and reinvesting heavily in engineering and AI. We process pay for 200,000+ payees across 20,000+ companies. The platform works, and we have the runway to make it modern, AI-native, and worth building a career on.
Role Description The Smartly Platforms and Architecture Team are looking for a Product Platform Verification Engineer to own the frameworks, pipelines, and guardrails that give the engineering org confidence in what it ships. - Verification at Smartly is broader than testing; it's part of how work flows, from spec to ship. - You own the verification frameworks, pipelines, and guardrails that engineering teams across the company consume as self-service: functional, integration, security, performance. What you'll do: - Build verification frameworks and pipelines. - Pair with product teams to verify intangible qualities of the product. - Assess the quality and coverage of current automation harnesses. - Fill gaps found in automation coverage. - Run experiments to assess adherence to architectural principles. - Write verification approach docs, failure-mode analyses, and coverage analyses. - Code on the frameworks and pipeline tooling you own. - Engage with shared AI tooling to enhance engineering efficiency. Focus time is non-negotiable; meetings have a purpose or they don't happen. Qualifications - Experience building verification infrastructure. - Designed and maintained automated frameworks for other engineers. - Ability to verify web applications, APIs, and data layers across functional and non-functional requirements. - Integrated verification into CI/CD pipelines. - Comfortable reading and writing in C#/dotnet, Python, or TypeScript. Requirements - Judgement, taste, vision, and context. - Ability to differentiate between coverage and the appearance of coverage in AI-generated tests. - Excitement about AI changes in engineering. - Experience with scaffolding generation and gap analysis. Benefits - Respect for focus time and remote-first intentionality. - Strategic laziness to automate manual tasks. - Team standards reflect individual standards. Company Description Smartly is committed to building a team that reflects Aotearoa New Zealand, and encourages applications from diverse backgrounds.
Role Description The Smartly Platforms and Architecture Team are looking for a Principal Product Platform Engineer to own end-to-end technology outcomes and architecture. - Creating structural leverage across the business through technology and automation. - Creating structural advantages in cost-to-serve. - Helping engineers be the best versions of themselves through training, mentoring, and sponsorship. This Principal role creates the most architectural leverage in the company. It's vital that we have a kind, thoughtful, technically deep individual contributor in the role who can lift up the business around them. You are the senior technical authority in a major platform domain, probably core platform design + shared frameworks, and we'll shape that to your strengths. - Co-author the platform strategy. - Make architectural decisions that other teams depend on. - Design and operate shared services, identity foundations, developer tooling, and reliability standards. - Drive simplification of the platform over time. No two weeks are the same, but here's the rough shape: - Design reviews — running them and being the second pair of eyes in reviews across the org. - 1:1s with the engineers you mentor and with the manager. - Pairing with engineers in product squads on harder technical problems. - Building — automating processes and working on clean architecture upgrades. - Writing architecture decisions, design docs, and agentic prompts for the team. - Focus time is non-negotiable; meetings have a purpose or they don't happen. Qualifications - Experience as a Principal or senior-most engineer on a team. - Background as a solution architect who has been coding. - Experience making architectural calls at scale. - Deep comfort in a demanding application engineering space. - Familiarity with C# and dotnet; knowledge of Python and TypeScript is a plus. - Experience with domain-driven design. - Ability to thrive in a modular monolith environment. Requirements - Judgement, taste, vision, and context. - Ability to differentiate between excellent work and work that merely appears excellent. - Understanding of best practices and their applicability. Benefits - Hands-on management that builds empathy. - Investment in personal growth and ability to grow others. - Focus on strategic laziness to automate manual tasks. - Respect for focus time and remote-first intentionality. Company Description Smartly is committed to building a team that reflects Aotearoa New Zealand, and particularly welcomes applications from women, Māori, Pasifika, takatāpui, disabled and neurodivergent engineers, and anyone who took a non-linear path into the work. If you need any adjustments to be at your best in the conversation or beyond, tell us.
