Job Description

Engineering Manager, Data & Clinical Integration Teams

CareMessage

• You are excited about and comfortable with taking responsibility for making sure that you understand and can defend the investments and decisions your team is making, helping to challenge, redirect and support their decisions cross-functionally. Demonstrating a personal understanding of our organizational objectives, and how the specific work you are directing is the most valuable investment to help achieve those within your scope of ownership. • Directly oversee and guide the Data and Clinical Integration teams, providing consistent, constructive feedback and conducting performance reviews to foster professional growth. • You know what the difference between good and great performance looks like and you know how to get that from your team members, including when to challenge, redirect, manage up and or out. • You know when and how to advocate for new team members or missing skillsets that would help the department accomplish more. • Actively participate in the recruitment, interviewing, and retention of top-tier engineering talent, and collaborate with other people managers to nurture team engagement and company culture. • Champion the adoption of modern, AI-assisted engineering practices across both teams by evaluating new tools, setting responsible-use guardrails (especially around PHI), and continuously raising the bar on productivity and quality. • Working with engineering and product leadership, refine and execute the technical strategy for converting EHR clinical data into trustworthy, query-ready data that measurably demonstrates health outcomes. • Manage shared roadmaps and dependencies between the two teams, given that Integrations owns the first step of the clinical data pipeline that Data builds upon. • Partner with Product to scale insight generation from our clinical data — combining AI/ML approaches with human analysis — while keeping it trustworthy and compliant. • Remain close to the solutions and, when necessary, play a hands-on role helping to communicate via prototypes, or vibe-coded example applications, answer key questions via SQL or other technical tools. • Stay abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends and advocate for best practices in the department; review and collaborate with engineers on technical specifications to ensure excellence in execution. • Work closely with Product and Design to conceptualize and define impactful solutions, often through Product Requirements Documents (PRDs). • Skillfully lead and facilitate team rituals such as Kickoffs, Retrospectives, and Tech Debt Reviews, and collaborate cross-functionally to understand estimates and prioritize the backlog, making pragmatic trade-offs. • Develop processes, tools, and systems that enhance the departments' overall effectiveness. • Contribute to the team by participating in the On-Call (PagerDuty) rotation.

Job Requirements

  • Proven Track Record: At least 5 years of successful experience as an Engineering Manager over Integration and/or Data Engineering teams, in two or more early-to-growth-stage remote startup environments.
  • Strategic Leadership: Demonstrated ability to lead and drive the delivery of long-term technical projects across multiple teams driving measurable outcomes.
  • Technical Proficiency: Strong technical acumen with a deep understanding of SQL, data concepts, pipelines (ELT), and cloud data warehousing.
  • Modern & AI-Assisted Engineering: A track record of adopting modern development practices and leveraging AI-assisted tooling (e.g., Agentic coding, harnesses, and LLM-based workflows) to raise engineering velocity and quality — with the judgment to apply them responsibly in a healthcare/PHI context. You actively coach your teams to fold these tools into their day-to-day work.
  • Hands-on Experience: The ability to get hands-on with SQL and data tooling when needed. (This is predominantly a management position; however, you should be able to dig in to help answer key data questions and unblock the team.)
  • Collaborative Expertise: Exceptional collaboration and influencing skills, working effectively cross-departmentally to craft optimal solutions while navigating multiple constraints.
  • Situational Awareness: The ability to discern when to dive into technical details and when to maintain a higher-level perspective when working with Engineers, Product, and Design.
  • Cultural Advocate: A commitment to cultivating both individual growth and a high-performance engineering culture that attracts top talent.
  • Mentorship: A growth-oriented mindset with the capability to guide others on their development journey.
  • Communication Skills: Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, especially in a fully remote environment.
  • Autonomous Prioritization: Proficiency in identifying and managing priorities independently across two teams, ensuring an efficient workflow.
  • Diversity and Inclusion: Dedication to promoting diversity and inclusion within teams, especially given our global team composition.
  • This role requires the candidate to reside within the United States of America.

Benefits

  • Competitive salaries and benefits packages
  • Paid parental leave for biological and adopted children
  • 18 paid company holidays, including a one week mid-year and one week end-of-year break
  • 9 wellness days to be used for self-care- or anything that comes up in life
  • 15 days of PTO
  • 1-month (20 working days) paid sabbatical after the 4-year anniversary, and every 4 years thereafter
  • Generous medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and their families
  • Health Savings Accounts and Flexible Spending Accounts
  • Short & long-term disability insurance
  • $100 per employee yearly wellness budget, with flexibility to spend on physical, emotional, and mental wellness resources
  • PerkSpot: Instant access to discounts on products & services from hundreds of vendors
  • Volunteerism incorporated in onboarding and encouraged on an ongoing basis

Role Description As a Senior Organisational Development Practitioner, you are the person who sets the bar for how coaching and organisational development is practised here. You coach leaders to a clear standard of management excellence. You diagnose how a whole organisation is led and drive the plan to raise it. You develop the practitioners working in the field. It is one of the most senior and demanding Talent roles at Canonical: hands-on coaching and organisational-development craft with real leaders, in a company that expects you to be credible in a room of directors and to earn that credibility fast. You work both from the central team and embedded inside a leader's organisation for periods, turning what you learn in the field back into how we develop leaders and managers across Canonical. Location: These are remote based positions, available across EMEA and the Americas. What you deliver - Raising individual leaders - Coaching leaders to visibly raise their game against a clear standard of management excellence. - Landing the hard conversations, because you coach leaders to make them happen. - Turning 360 feedback into real, followed-through commitments, not a report that gets filed. - Lifting organisations and the company - Leaving an organisation you take on visibly better led, off a sharp first-weeks diagnosis and a plan you own and drive. - Contributing to defining and implementing new ways of working across our globally distributed company. - Building the function and its standards - Developing the practitioners in the field so they get visibly better at their craft under your supervision. - Setting the bar for how coaching and organisational development is done at Canonical: owning what exceptional looks like, proving the methods in the field, and holding the practice to them. - Sharpening the management-excellence standard itself across Canonical, by feeding back what you learn in the field. Qualifications - Deep, hands-on coaching and organisational-development practice with real leaders and teams, not just programme design. - A track record of measurably changing how leaders behave, with specific examples you can talk through. - Credibility: you can walk into a room of directors and be taken seriously. - Effectiveness operating inside someone else's organisation without formal authority. - A clear and honest philosophy of development: you know where coaching helps, and you are candid about where a role or fit decision is the right call. - An exceptional academic track record from high school and university. - Excellent written and spoken English. - Sincere personal motivation aligned with our mission. - Willingness to travel up to 4 times a year for internal events. Requirements - Precise, taking care to deliver correctness and clarity. - Reliable, delivering high quality work that builds trust and confidence. - Accessible, collaborating to build products and systems that are usable. - Adroit, blending enthusiasm, knowledge, adaptability, style and character. Nice-to-have skills - A management-consulting background: comfortable with ambiguity, able to diagnose, propose and move. - Experience coaching across a distributed, fast-moving, technical organisation. - Experience building competency or development frameworks. - Experience designing and running effective workshops or training sessions, in person and online. - Learning-design judgment for development materials. We want the design sense; AI handles the production drafting. - Talent-development experience, valued alongside but secondary to coaching and consulting craft. Benefits - We consider geographical location, experience, and performance in shaping compensation worldwide. - Annual compensation review. - Performance-driven annual bonus. - Personal learning and development budget of USD 2,000 per year. - Recognition rewards. - Annual holiday leave. - Maternity and paternity leave. - Employee Assistance Programme. - Opportunity to travel to new locations to meet colleagues. - Priority Pass, and travel upgrades for long haul company events.
