Title: IT Engineer Location: San Francisco, CA Department: IT Hybrid Full-time Job Description: ABOUT RETOOL Nearly every company in the world runs on custom software for critical operations like tracking performance metrics, handling customer support workflows, building admin dashboards, and countless other processes you might not have even thought of. But most companies don't have adequate resources to properly invest in these tools, leading to a lot of old and clunky internal software or, even worse, users still stuck in manual and spreadsheet flows. At Retool, we’re building the first enterprise AppGen platform: software that transforms natural language into production-ready code, integrates directly with business data, and meets the highest standards of security and governance. AI is redefining what it means to build software—and who gets to build it. The definition of “developer” now includes analysts, operators, and domain experts creating solutions directly. As the pool of builders widens, so does the complexity of what they need to build. The opportunity is enormous, but so is the challenge of enabling this larger community to build production-grade software safely. That means AI that understands real business data, enforces enterprise policies automatically, and empowers teams to create once and reuse everywhere with shared, trusted components. Over 100 million hours of work has been automated by developers and domain experts using our platform, freeing them to focus on creative problem-solving and strategic initiatives that drive real business value. The people closest to knowing what needs to be built can now safely create custom solutions within enterprise guardrails. And that's a mission worth striving for. Let's build the future together! WHY WE’RE LOOKING FOR YOU Retool is growing quickly, and the systems that power our internal operations need to scale with speed, reliability, and efficiency. We’re looking for an IT² Engineer to design and build the systems that will power the next phase of that growth. This is not a traditional IT role. You won’t be measured on tickets closed. You will be measured on systems improved, workflows automated, and manual work eliminated. This role is focused on leverage. You will build internal tools and automation that reduce operational overhead, consolidate (and eliminate!) third-party tooling, and enable teams across Retool to move faster with fewer constraints. You will also play a critical role in making Retool its own best customer by building with our platform and shaping how it evolves through real-world usage. You will also help level up the team by mentoring other team members and contributing to a culture of strong engineering practices within IT². WHO YOU’LL WORK WITH You’ll partner closely with teams across Security, Infrastructure, Finance, Workplace, and People Ops to design and build scalable systems that power internal operations. This role sits at the intersection of systems, security, and internal product development. You’ll work cross-functionally to translate operational pain points into automated workflows and internal tools, while helping define how Retool itself is used inside the company. IN THIS ROLE, YOU’LL - Design and build internal tools using Retool to power IT, Security, and operational workflows across the company - Automate core business processes, including onboarding, offboarding, access reviews, procurement, and internal service workflows - Eliminate manual work and reduce operational overhead by replacing repetitive processes with scalable systems - Identify opportunities to consolidate or replace third-party SaaS tools with internal solutions, reducing cost and complexity - Own identity lifecycle systems, including provisioning, RBAC, and integrations across tools like Okta, Rippling, and other critical systems - Improve security and compliance posture through automated access controls, auditing, and system design - Build and maintain integrations across internal and external systems using APIs and event-driven workflows - Partner with IT, Security, Infrastructure, and business teams to turn fragmented processes into scalable, well-designed systems - Act as an internal product builder and power user of Retool, helping shape how we use and improve our own platform - Define and implement scalable patterns and best practices for internal tooling across the company - Mentor junior team members and help raise the technical bar for automation and internal tooling across the team THE SKILLSET YOU’LL BRING - 5+ years of experience in IT Engineering, Systems Engineering, Internal Tools, or similar roles in a fast-growing technology company - Proven track record of building internal tools and automation systems that eliminate manual operational work and scale business processes - Strong experience designing and implementing automation using programming languages such as Python or JavaScript, including API integrations and workflow orchestration - Deep systems thinking with an automation-first mindset. You instinctively replace manual processes with scalable solutions - Hands-on experience with identity and access management systems including Okta, SSO, SCIM, and RBAC, and designing reliable lifecycle workflows - Experience operating across complex SaaS environments, with a focus on consolidation, optimization, and cost reduction - Ability to identify inefficiencies, prioritize high-impact opportunities, and build durable, maintainable systems - Strong communication skills and ability to operate cross-functionally with technical and non-technical stakeholders - Experience mentoring or supporting junior engineers and contributing to a strong engineering culture - High ownership mindset with a focus on measurable impact including efficiency gains, cost reduction, and risk mitigation For candidates based in the United States, the pay range(s) for this role is listed below and represents base salary range for non-commissionable roles or on-target earnings (OTE) for commissionable roles. This salary range may be inclusive of several career levels at Retool and will be narrowed during the interview process based on a number of factors such as (but not limited to), scope and responsibilities, the candidate’s experience and qualifications, and location. Additional compensation in the form(s) of equity and/or commission are dependent on the position offered. Retool provides a comprehensive benefit plan, including medical, dental, vision, and 401(k). Pay and benefits are subject to change at any time, consistent with the terms of any applicable compensation or benefit plans. The base pay range for this role is $150,000 – $200,000 per year.
