Job Description
Startup Controller & Fractional CFO Services Manager
Lazo
Role Description We are looking for a versatile finance leader to join our team in a dual role: - Internal (20%): Act as Lazo’s controller, overseeing internal reporting, financial operations, and contributing to key OKRs. - Client-facing (80%): Lead and grow our Fractional CFO and FP&A services, advising a portfolio of startups and helping scale this business unit. You’ll bridge internal excellence with client advisory, deliver valuable insights across our customer base, and help build out the next evolution of our CFO services. Responsibilities - Act as the bridge between the bookkeeping team and the client, bringing value beyond the numbers. - Identify opportunities to improve processes, reporting, and financial structure for our clients. - Work closely with the bookkeeping team to understand each client’s business and transform raw data into valuable insights. - Lead the early development of an internal Finance Advisory function to support our clients with forecasting, budgeting, cash flow analysis, and more. Financial & Advisory Responsibilities - Review and analyze monthly financial reports before delivery to clients. - Suggest improvements to enhance the quality and usefulness of the reports. - Participate in client meetings to explain and interpret financial statements. - Help clients understand the story behind their numbers and support strategic discussions. - Design and implement internal tools (cash flow models, dashboards, financial KPIs). - Set up frameworks and best practices for the new finance advisory offering. Internal Controller (20%) - Oversee financial operations and reporting for Lazo, including dashboards and board reporting. - Support finance-related company OKRs, including cash flow management and controller-level processes. - Serve as a liaison between operations, finance, and leadership teams. Fractional CFO / FP&A (80%) - Sell and lead CFO and FP&A services for Lazo’s clients. - Guide clients on budgeting, forecasting, runway, burn rate, and investor-readiness. - Assist in fundraising preparation and create data room-ready financial materials. - Own financial modeling and cash flow analysis with a strong advisory mindset. - Maintain high-touch service while leveraging AI and automation opportunities. CFO Business Line Development - Help build out Lazo’s fractional CFO offering into a scalable, repeatable business unit. - Contribute to pricing, packaging, and go-to-market strategy. - Collaborate with leadership on the development of an external CFO bench. - Co-lead design of financial automation solutions (e.g., future CFO AI Agent). Qualifications - Experience in both worlds ideally trained in a large corporate or Big 4 environment (e.g., roles like Financial Analyst, Audit Associate, or Corporate Controller) but currently working with startups or fast-paced businesses in roles such as Fractional CFO, Head of Finance, or Startup Controller. - Prior work at a fractional CFO boutique or multi-client finance firm is a strong plus. - Solid background in accounting, finance, FP&A, or controller roles. - Skilled in budgeting, forecasting, cash flow modeling, dashboards, and financial storytelling. - Confident leading client-facing conversations with founders and startup teams. - Proactive, adaptable, and excited to build from scratch in an early-stage environment. - Excellent communicator, fluent in English, with a service-oriented mindset. - Bonus: passion for automation and AI tools that can streamline finance workflows. Benefits - Flexible work culture - we focus on goal achievement! - 100% remote. - 3 weeks of vacation. - Week off between Christmas and New Year's Eve. - Health benefits. - Birthday day off. - Marriage leave, maternity/paternity/adoption leave. - Develop in a fast-paced and challenging environment. - Be part of a highly committed team with an excellent work environment. - Work for one of the most challenging ecosystems: the United States.
