You will actively participate in the enhancement and evolution of their Java backend applications and systems. You will be an integral part of a collaborative team where Product, Engineering, and Quality Assurance work harmoniously to shape the entire product suite within an agile framework. Your role extends beyond code maintenance; it involves innovating new features, enhancing codebase quality, and exploring emerging technologies. Responsibilities - Java Development: Contribute to the design and implementation of large-scale backend applications. Ensure code quality and support your teammates in maintaining strong engineering standards. - Distributed Systems Design: Build reliable and fault-tolerant systems using message queues (RabbitMQ, Kafka, etc.) and implement best practices for scalability and resilience. - Performance & Architecture: Improve system scalability, reliability, and architectural clarity through thoughtful design and optimization. - Code Ownership & Delivery: Commit production-ready code, apply design patterns effectively, and solve complex enterprise-level challenges in a dynamic startup environment. Qualifications - 10+ years of experience in backend software development with Java. - Advanced English level for daily communication with native speakers (must to have). - Solid understanding of message queues (RabbitMQ, Kafka, etc.) and reliability patterns (retries, DLQs, outbox pattern). - 4+ years building and maintaining highly scalable, distributed systems. - Experience with SaaS or Product companies. - Experience with caching systems. - Advanced proficiency in OOP design principles and scalable data structures. - Strong experience with SQL and relational databases. - Experience in greenfield development and building systems from scratch. - Knowledge of event-driven architectures and microservices patterns. - Experience with Kotlin (Nice to have). Role Description A seed-stage healthcare technology company is building the data infrastructure behind faster, clearer healthcare coverage decisions, and is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to own and scale that infrastructure end-to-end. - The team is small and moves fast, aggregating and normalizing over 100,000 medical policies from 100+ payers into structured, searchable intelligence using AI-driven systems. - The founder is currently the sole engineer, so this hire acts as technical lead — reviewing code and setting architectural direction for a small group of part-time and offshore engineers, without managing people directly. - Day-to-day, the role centers on: - Building and scaling web scraper infrastructure. - Using LLMs to structure unstructured payer policy text. - Standing up CI/CD and reliability improvements across the data pipeline. - Success means the founder is no longer the bottleneck — the data infrastructure runs reliably and accurately and scales without constant direction. Qualifications - 5+ years of backend software engineering experience, with at least 3 years in backend-focused (not generalist full-stack) roles. - 3+ years of professional Python as a primary backend language. - SQL proficiency with relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, or SQL Server), including complex queries and schema design. - Hands-on AWS experience (Azure or GCP transferable) deploying and managing production services, plus CI/CD pipeline ownership. - Experience building and maintaining production data pipelines or ETL systems that ingest from inconsistent, messy, or unstructured external sources. - Demonstrated end-to-end system or architecture ownership at an early-stage startup or small engineering team (2–15 engineers). - English at C1+ CEFR level for technical communication on video calls with the founder and engineering team.
