Role Description As our FinOps Manager, you'll own the financial strategy behind our cloud infrastructure, ensuring every engineering dollar delivers maximum value. Reporting to the Chief Technology Officer, you'll partner closely with Engineering, Product, Finance, and Operations to build a culture of cloud cost accountability while enabling teams to innovate quickly and efficiently. This role combines financial analysis, cloud architecture awareness, operational excellence, and cross-functional leadership. You'll transform cloud spend into actionable insights, establish governance that scales with our business, and help engineering teams optimize performance without sacrificing innovation. Your Mission (Should You Choose to Accept It) - Cloud Financial Management - Own Slingshot's cloud financial operations strategy across AWS and other cloud platforms. - Develop forecasting models for cloud infrastructure spend and improve cost predictability. - Monitor cloud usage trends and proactively identify optimization opportunities. - Establish cost allocation methodologies that provide visibility across products, teams, and business units. - Cost Optimization & Governance - Lead initiatives that reduce cloud spend while maintaining application reliability and performance. - Implement policies, budgets, alerts, and governance controls to improve financial accountability. - Drive adoption of cloud cost optimization best practices, including rightsizing, commitment management, storage optimization, and resource lifecycle management. - Partner with engineering leaders to balance technical decisions with financial outcomes. - Cross-Functional Business Partnership - Serve as the primary FinOps partner to Engineering while collaborating closely with Finance, Product, and Executive Leadership. - Translate technical cloud consumption into business-friendly financial insights. - Support annual planning, forecasting, and monthly infrastructure budget reviews. - Help engineering teams make informed architectural decisions by providing cost visibility and financial recommendations. - Reporting & Analytics - Develop executive dashboards and KPIs that provide visibility into cloud spending, utilization, and efficiency. - Present recommendations to technical and executive stakeholders using clear, data-driven analysis. - Track metrics such as unit economics, cloud cost per customer, workload efficiency, utilization rates, and infrastructure trends. - Vendor & Financial Operations - Manage relationships with cloud vendors and partners. - Support contract negotiations and evaluate purchasing strategies including Reserved Instances, Savings Plans, and enterprise agreements. - Ensure accurate cloud billing, chargebacks, and cost reporting. - Identify opportunities to improve procurement strategies and maximize return on cloud investments. - Operational Excellence - Establish scalable FinOps processes, documentation, automation, and governance frameworks. - Build engineering guardrails that promote cost-aware development without slowing innovation. - Champion FinOps best practices across the organization and foster a culture of cloud cost ownership. - Continuously evaluate tools and automation that improve cloud visibility, reporting, and operational efficiency. - Stay current on FinOps Foundation guidance and emerging cloud optimization practices. Qualifications - 5+ years of experience in FinOps, Cloud Financial Management, FP&A supporting Engineering, Cloud Infrastructure, or related technical finance roles. - Experience managing cloud costs within AWS (Azure and GCP experience is a plus). - Strong understanding of cloud architecture, infrastructure services, and cloud cost drivers. - Experience with cloud cost management platforms such as CloudHealth, Apptio Cloudability, Finout, ProsperOps, AWS Cost Explorer, or similar solutions. - Strong analytical skills with advanced Excel and experience using SQL, Power BI, Tableau, or similar reporting tools. - Experience partnering directly with engineering organizations to drive cloud cost optimization initiatives. - Knowledge of budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, and financial reporting. - Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to financial stakeholders and financial concepts to technical teams. - Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Information Systems, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field. Bonus Cargo - FinOps Certified Practitioner or FinOps Certified Professional certification. - Experience supporting Kubernetes, containerized workloads, or large-scale SaaS platforms. - Knowledge of Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation, etc.). - Experience working in high-growth SaaS, aerospace, defense, or government contracting environments. - Experience with Datadog, Grafana, Snowflake, or cloud observability platforms. - Experience implementing automated cloud governance and cost optimization workflows.
