Role Description The Senior Cloud Engineer is a senior technical role within the Cloud Engineering function, responsible for the design, implementation, and ongoing operation of Brightsolid’s large-scale OpenStack-based cloud platforms and associated storage systems. You will act as a technical leader within the team, ensuring that platforms are architected correctly for multi-tenant environments while supporting the ongoing evolution of the Brightsolid Cloud platform. This role represents a shift from traditional public cloud and VMware-based platforms towards open-source technologies, with a strong focus on OpenStack, Canonical tooling, and large-scale infrastructure engineering. Key Responsibilities - Technical Leadership - Provide hands-on technical leadership across OpenStack-based cloud platforms, acting as a subject matter expert in cloud infrastructure and distributed systems. - Support the development of engineering standards, patterns, and reusable designs, while mentoring other engineers within the team. - Ensure solutions are designed to meet both customer and business requirements in multi-tenant environments. - Platform Engineering - Design, implement, and manage Brightsolid’s OpenStack cloud platform, including compute, storage, and networking components. - Work across the full lifecycle of the platform, including build, deployment, optimisation, and scaling of services. - Ensure the platform remains highly available, resilient, and capable of supporting diverse workloads. - Storage and Data Platforms - Design and support large-scale storage platforms underpinning the cloud environment, including high-performance and enterprise storage solutions. - Contribute to the architecture and operation of block, object, and distributed storage services, ensuring performance, durability, and scalability requirements are met. - Automation and Infrastructure as Code - Drive the adoption of infrastructure-as-code and automation practices across the cloud platform. - Develop and maintain deployment tooling, orchestration templates, and automation pipelines to ensure consistent and repeatable platform delivery. - Support a continuous delivery approach for infrastructure services. - Operations and Service Reliability - Support the ongoing operation of the Brightsolid cloud platform, including monitoring, troubleshooting, and resolution of complex issues. - Ensure platform compliance, patching, and lifecycle management activities are performed in line with operational standards. - Contribute to a high-availability, 24x7 service environment. - Technology Strategy and Innovation - Contribute to the evolution of Brightsolid’s cloud platform, working closely with Cloud Engineering leadership and Product Management to enhance capabilities and introduce new technologies. - Support the ongoing transition to open-source platforms and ensure alignment with long-term strategic goals. - Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement - Work closely with Network Engineering, Security Operations, Product Management, and Customer Success teams to deliver integrated cloud services. - Engage with external partners including Canonical to support platform development, deployment, and optimisation. Qualifications - Strong experience in a senior cloud engineering or infrastructure engineering role. - Demonstrated experience designing and operating large-scale cloud platforms or distributed systems. - Proven expertise in Linux-based systems and infrastructure. - Strong understanding of infrastructure-as-code and automation principles. - Experience working in a managed service or service provider environment delivering high availability solutions. Role Description The Cloud Engineer – Junior supports the implementation and maintenance of cloud-based infrastructure in an enterprise environment, focusing on foundational engineering, automation, and security practices under the guidance of senior team members. This role helps provision cloud resources, implement basic Infrastructure as Code, and maintain secure and scalable services across commercial cloud platforms. The position contributes to monitoring, troubleshooting, and cost optimization activities while building skills in cloud architecture, networking, and security. The engineer works closely with more experienced staff to ensure cloud environments remain reliable, compliant, and aligned with client requirements. Key Responsibilities - Assist with provisioning and managing cloud resources across major commercial cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure), following established patterns and guardrails. - Support Infrastructure as Code development and maintenance using tools such as Terraform, ARM templates, or similar automation frameworks. - Implement basic cloud networking configurations including virtual networks, subnets, routing, and connectivity under direction from senior engineers. - Apply foundational cloud security practices including IAM configuration, role and policy management, and access control implementation. - Monitor cloud environments using native tools, assist in triaging alerts, and help troubleshoot performance and availability issues. - Support cloud cost management efforts by identifying unused or underutilized resources and recommending cleanup or right-sizing actions. - Assist in implementing backup, recovery, and basic business continuity processes for cloud workloads in line with enterprise standards. - Document cloud configurations, standard operating procedures, and runbooks to support team knowledge sharing and operational consistency. Qualifications - Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in IT, Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related field. - Foundational experience (typically 1–3 years) in cloud engineering or IT infrastructure roles with exposure to at least one major cloud provider. - Basic hands-on experience with cloud resource provisioning, automation, and security concepts in an enterprise or client environment. - Ability to meet DoD 8140 requirements for the role and obtain/maintain an active Secret clearance as required by the client. - US citizenship required to support federal client and clearance requirements. - Ability to work effectively in a remote team environment and follow established engineering standards and procedures. Preferred Qualifications - Cloud foundational certification such as AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner or Microsoft Azure Fundamentals. - Exposure to scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash) for automation, tooling, or cloud resource management. - Familiarity with container technologies such as Docker and basic orchestration concepts. - Experience working within a federal or enterprise IT environment with structured governance, compliance, and change management processes.
