Role Description Under direction, participates in planned research by analyzing, abstracting, entering and managing data in a research database. Monitors and maintains relevant databases. Also coordinates abstract writing and presentation of data as required. The Barzilab (barzilab.org) at the Lifespan Brain Institute of Penn Medicine and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia is seeking curious and motivated data scientists to join an interdisciplinary research team. This position involves working with large-scale human datasets to address questions related to brain development, mental health, and behavioral outcomes across the lifespan. Projects span a range of study designs and data sources, including clinical, genetic, environmental, and digital phenotyping data. The role will involve contributing across the full data analysis pipeline, including secure data access and management, data cleaning and integration, exploratory and inferential analyses, application of statistical and computational models, and the visualization and communication of findings. The position will be highly collaborative and embedded within active research projects in the lab. For motivated candidates, the position offers substantial opportunities for skill development in data science, applied statistics, and translational research. Prior background in neuroscience or psychiatry is not required. All work will be conducted under the direct supervision of Dr. Ran Barzilay. What you will do - Integrate, transform, and manage clinical and research data from multiple sources to produce high-quality, analysis-ready datasets. - Design, develop, and implement advanced statistical and computational analyses to support research objectives, clinical insights and evidence-based decision-making. - Coordinate abstract writing and presentation as required. - Monitor and maintain research databases, ensuring data integrity, accuracy, security, and compliance with institutional and regulatory standards. - Act as divisional resource for research database management, providing expertise on data structures, workflows, and best practices. - Keep up-to-date with all possible database capabilities as well as analytical tools and related software and technologies to continuously improve data management and analytical processes. - Perform additional related research-related activities as needed, such as literature reviews, etc. Qualifications - Bachelor's Degree Required - Bachelor's Degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, or information technology related field Preferred Requirements - At least one (1) year of clinical/research databases and clinical/research experience Required - At least three (3) years of clinical/research databases and clinical/research experience Preferred Skills and Abilities - Knowledge of analytical and statistical methods for evaluating research findings and outcomes across varied datasets and applications. - Proficient in statistical programming languages such as R and Python. - Proficiency with spreadsheet software including Microsoft Excel. - Proficiency with database management systems such as Microsoft Access and Oracle. - Basic knowledge of medical terminology and clinical research concepts. - Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. - Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities. - Self-motivated learner with the ability to independently acquire new technical skills. - Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional standards. - Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. - Ability to gather, analyze and interpret data to support evidence-based recommendations/decisions making. - Ability to convey complex or technical information clearly and effectively. - Ability to collaborate with stakeholders at all levels. - Ability to be flexible and adaptable to adjust to evolving research needs and priorities.
