Job Description

Engineering Manager

Swing Development (SwingDev)

• Lead, mentor and grow a team of engineers (4 engineers, mostly senior), and lead the recruitment and build-out of a second team. • Manage one of Hippo's top strategic engineering spaces – Hippo Plus – end‑to‑end, from technical direction to delivery. • Introduce structure, processes, and good engineering practices. • Collaborate with talented Product Managers to manage the team’s project roadmap, clarifying requirements, and ensuring a balance of technical excellence, agility, and user benefit. • Partner closely with business stakeholders to translate business needs into engineering priorities. • Balance new feature development with the operational needs of a fast-scaling, still-validating product. • Show strong technical leadership with a data‑driven mindset, focusing on excellent execution and high‑quality software, and ensuring the team delivers real business value – not just features. • Coordinate with teams in our global locations across the US, Brazil and Poland.

Job Requirements

  • Have a strong software engineering background – you don't need to code daily, but you need to understand what's happening under the hood well enough to mentor and push back when needed
  • Have led a technical team before, ideally during a product's scaling stage
  • Have experience working with and leading distributed, remote teams across time zones
  • Appreciate Product as a true partner and co-owner of software products
  • Maintain a relentless focus on end-users, creating customer-centric solutions
  • Have a proven ability to build teams, develop individuals, and influence cross-functional teams and senior management
  • Are comfortable with ambiguity – this is a new venture, still figuring things out, and priorities can shift
  • Are product-minded and enjoy being close to the business side, not just the codebase
  • Have a high level of technical proficiency with some of Hippo's tech stack, including JavaScript/Node.js and React
  • Have a great command of English (both written & spoken) and Polish at least on a communicative level.
  • Are available in the afternoons – we prioritize everyone's personal time and work-life fit, but since we work in multinational teams, evening meetings may be necessary to ensure smooth communication across time zones

Benefits

  • Form of employment of your choosing
  • Remote work & flexible working hours
  • Non-service days
  • Private medical care with dentists & orthodontists package for you and your family
  • Group life insurance
  • Psychotherapists support — free online sessions with psychologists and psychotherapists.
  • Home physiotherapy
  • Multisport card & meditation apps reimbursed 50%
  • Gear with Apple Logo and a nice Dell monitor
  • 50% reimbursement for courses, conferences, books & certificates
  • Free access to private language lessons
  • 6 Personal Development Days & 4 Voluntary Days Off
  • Cafeteria platform – extra “stówka” every month to spend on whatever you want to
  • Nanny services for parents
  • Concierge services – a personal assistant to help you to deal with your everyday matters
  • Chill room with table football & PlayStation 5
  • Free snacks, and ice cream in the office (every day, all year round!)
  • Free Friday Lunch in the office
  • Team building events – we party together several times a year during the annual Offsite & Christmas Parties, beer after work, or our #WinterEscapeMonth workation in Cyprus

Full TimeRemoteTeam 1,001-5,000

Role Description The Accounts team is about to split. The ledger is being carved out into its own dedicated team (the Ledger Team), with a mandate to treat it as the high-volume, high-criticality system it is: low latency, high availability, rigorous consistency guarantees. Today the ledger shares a team with account opening, lifecycle management, and compliance. As Tide has scaled across more markets and more complexity, the ledger needs dedicated engineering focus: its own team, its own SLOs, its own on-call practice, its own technical roadmap. The EM we hire now will join to lead the full Accounts team through that transition. Working alongside the existing team, which includes strong staff-level IC experience, you will help design the seam between the two teams, work out where engineers land, and build the organisational and technical foundation for both. When the split lands, you will move across to lead the Ledger Team. A new EM will be hired to run the remaining Accounts team. The ledger underpins every payment, every balance check, every statement across all markets. It needs to be engineered to the same standard as any large-scale financial system: fault tolerant, highly available, operationally rigorous. You will own the technical direction of that system alongside experienced ICs who know it deeply. This is hands-on work, not process management. - Leading the Accounts team (9 engineers: backend, mobile, web) through the ledger split, including helping shape how engineers map to each team and sequencing the transition. - Working with the existing team to define the technical seam: ledger writes, consistency guarantees, schema ownership versus account opening, lifecycle, statements. - Setting the engineering direction for the Ledger Team post-split: performance, availability, consistency, long-term architecture. - Owning system stability and operational reliability: SLOs, observability, on-call practice. - Partnering with product, compliance, and internal operations teams to make sure what gets built is accurate, supportable, and compliant across all markets. - Growing engineers at every level. The team spans early-career through senior. - Aligning with other EMs across Banking on cross-cutting infrastructure decisions. Qualifications - Meaningful engineering management experience. You have led teams through real delivery, not just been a strong tech lead. - A solid backend engineering foundation before moving into management, enough to earn credibility with the team and get into the detail when it matters. - Experience leading distributed, remote-first teams across time zones. - Proven experience leading technical teams, aligning with senior leadership on deliveries, and partnering with product. - Fintech or banking domain experience: you know the regulatory surface and what it means to run systems where correctness is not optional. - Strong grasp of high-volume distributed systems: consistency models, fault tolerance, reliability patterns, SLOs and SLAs, observability tooling. - Technically fluent: you can read the code, follow the architecture, and engage meaningfully with design decisions and production problems. - Backend engineering in a strongly-typed language (our stack is Java/Spring Boot; we want someone confident in a similar language and willing to engage with ours). - Experience with microservices in a cloud-native environment (we are AWS-heavy). - Relational database engineering at scale: transactions, consistency guarantees, and write performance at volume. - Event-driven and async systems experience. - Distributed systems migrations at scale. - Exposure to agentic or AI-integrated systems, and engineering practices. Requirements - You set technical direction and hold others to it. You are the person the team turns to when something is hard. - You understand that building reliable systems is the job, not a nice-to-have. - You communicate clearly with non-technical stakeholders (compliance, finance operations, risk) without losing precision. - You develop engineers at every level, with a plan for each person. Benefits - The gross annual salary for this position ranges from €75,200 - €94,000 depending on your skills and experience. - Remote first. - 25 days of paid annual leave. - 3 paid days off for volunteering or L&D activities. - Private Health Insurance. - Mental Health Support Platform. - FitPass. - Family and friendly leave (according to statutory). - Personal L&D budget. - Share Options.
