Job Description
Engineering Manager
Homeward
• Lead a team of 3-4 software engineers in the consistent, timely delivery of quality features and products • Own not just timely delivery, but validating that what the team ships actually works for our customers and operators • Foster a build, test, learn culture – shipping practical MVPs and iterating on feedback rather than waiting for perfect requirements, and helping the team stay effective amid ambiguity • Cultivate fluid collaboration across the stack and minimize serialized hand-offs, so work moves without "throw it over the wall" delays • Practice and champion strong engineering methods and practices • Set the team's norms for AI-assisted development – how engineers use AI coding assistants (Claude, Copilot) to speed up prototyping, code review, debugging, and documentation - and clear the path to adoption • Help your team build good judgment about where AI tools genuinely help and where they don't, keeping the quality bar high • Adapt the team's process as AI-assisted development changes how quickly work moves, and use metrics to make those calls • Coach team members as they take on greater skills and responsibilities • Work with product managers to understand requirements, prioritize backlogs, and set timelines • Own business metrics alongside product managers and cross-functional business partners
Job Requirements
- 2+ years of experience as a front-line manager in a high-growth organization
- 5+ years of experience as an individual contributor
- Demonstrable front-end or full-stack experience
- A track record of adopting AI-assisted development on your team and turning it into real throughput – not just tool licenses
- Enough fluency with AI-powered features (LLM API integrations, RAG, AI-driven automation) to scope, estimate, and make architecture calls credibly with your team
- Experience working on systems with both monoliths and microservices – bonus points if you can help determine when it's right to use one or the other
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to keep distributed, cross-functional teams aligned
- Incredibly strong ownership of delivering the right solutions at a high quality
- General curiosity and comfort navigating a fast-changing AI landscape
- Bonus: experience working in the Python web dev ecosystem (e.g., Flask, Django, Celery, etc.).
Benefits
- Comprehensive medical, dental, vision, and life insurance coverage – with company contributions towards premiums.
- Meaningful time off – including 20 days of paid vacation, 5 sick days, 12 company holidays, and 2 floating holidays.
- Generous paid parental leave of up to 13 weeks.
- 401(k) with employer contribution match.
- Remote-first work environment (our headquarters are in Austin, TX).
- Collaborative, low-ego team that values intellectual curiosity and continuous improvement.
