Role Description Device is a young and rapidly growing journal at the forefront of technology and engineering research, publishing work that applies creative and rigorous science to real-world challenges across electronics, energy, sensing, robotics, and beyond. We are seeking a Scientific Editor to join the Device team and contribute to its continued development as a leading venue for applied science. Working closely with and reporting to the Editor in Chief of Device, the new editor will help shape the scientific direction of the journal, expand its community, and represent the fields Device serves across the broader Cell Press portfolio. In addition to handling editorial responsibilities for Device, this editor will play an active role in identifying and routing high-quality technology and engineering manuscripts to other Cell Press journals, serving as an advocate for these disciplines throughout the organization. Responsibilities - Undertaking editorial evaluation of submissions to ensure the scientific quality and broader significance of published work. - Developing a cohesive, impactful, and forward-looking journal that reflects the creative application of technology across Device's scope. - Coordinating at least one special issue per year in collaboration with the editorial team. - Drawing on and expanding a network of leading researchers to attract influential submissions to Device and the wider Cell Press portfolio. - Identifying outstanding technology and engineering manuscripts suitable for transfer or commissioning across Cell Press journals, and acting as an ambassador for these fields throughout the organization. - Traveling to relevant conferences and research institutes to build community, identify emerging science, and promote Device. - Collaborating with colleagues across sales, marketing, and production to support the journal's growth targets and strategic objectives. - Fostering productive relationships with other editorial teams across the Cell Press portfolio. Qualifications - A PhD in a field relevant to Device's scope; backgrounds in semiconductors, neuromorphic computing, 2D materials, or electronics engineering are of particular interest, though outstanding candidates from across the journal's coverage areas, including robotics, energy devices, and sensing, are encouraged to apply. - Prior editorial experience is preferred; exceptional early-career candidates with a strong research background will be considered. - Demonstrated ability to think conceptually and critically across a broad range of scientific and technical topics. - Strong existing networks within the technology and engineering research communities, with the ability to engage effectively with researchers at all career stages and across international boundaries. - Excellent written and oral communication skills in English. - Candidates will be considered from all regions; priority will be given to those based in Korea, Japan, or the EU. Role Description In AAAS’s gold open access journal Science Advances, Editorial Coordinators (ECs) play a wide range of critical roles in the processing of the individual manuscripts that comprise the journal each week. ECs work collaboratively with a team of Senior Editorial Coordinators, Editorial Associates, and Editorial Managers to process manuscripts from submission to end publication, serving as points of contact and problem-solvers for internal editorial and production staff as well as external editors, authors, and reviewers. To achieve their goal of maintaining rapid, high-quality processing of manuscripts, ECs interact with external authors, editors, and reviewers on a daily basis by: - Answering questions - Assisting with the peer review process - Ensuring quality of final galley proofs They also communicate and coordinate with internal staff and vendors to identify and help address problems so that manuscripts move smoothly through the review and production system according to institutional standards and guidelines. ECs are responsible for managing submissions for 1-2 Deputy Editor groups. Location Requirement: This position is remote; however, candidates must be based in or willing to relocate to the DMV (D.C., Maryland, Virginia) area.
