Coder-Outpatient II
UMass Memorial Health
• Interprets clinical and diagnostic documentation for outpatient care • Assigns appropriate ICD-CM and CPT codes • Verifies documentation substantiating codes assigned • Assists in resolving incomplete/missing chart documentation • Participates in continuous coding audit and performance management program • Maintains coding accuracy rate of not less than 95% • Attends required training classes annually • Communicates with management about backlog situations and necessary documents • Alerts management to coding irregularities and trends
Job Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Medical coding certification preferred
- Training in medical terminology from an accredited program within one year of hire
- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or CCS-P certification preferred
- Knowledge of ICD-CM and CPT coding systems
- Knowledge of third-party payer requirements and federal/state regulations
- Good customer service skills
- Good organizational skills with attention to detail
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to problem solve and prioritize workload
- Three years of medical abstraction and outpatient coding experience preferred
