Job Description

Coder-Outpatient II

UMass Memorial Health

• Interprets clinical and diagnostic documentation for outpatient care • Assigns appropriate ICD-CM and CPT codes • Verifies documentation substantiating codes assigned • Assists in resolving incomplete/missing chart documentation • Participates in continuous coding audit and performance management program • Maintains coding accuracy rate of not less than 95% • Attends required training classes annually • Communicates with management about backlog situations and necessary documents • Alerts management to coding irregularities and trends

Job Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Medical coding certification preferred
  • Training in medical terminology from an accredited program within one year of hire
  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or CCS-P certification preferred
  • Knowledge of ICD-CM and CPT coding systems
  • Knowledge of third-party payer requirements and federal/state regulations
  • Good customer service skills
  • Good organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to problem solve and prioritize workload
  • Three years of medical abstraction and outpatient coding experience preferred
