The NCWRC is the regulatory agency responsible for the enforcement of North Carolina's fishing, hunting, trapping, and boating laws. The agency has an operational budget of approximately $100 million and employs approximately 700 full-time staff and 100 seasonal temporary staff across the state, including wildlife and fisheries biologists and technicians, wildlife law enforcement officers, wildlife educators, communication specialists, and customer service, information technology and administrative professionals. The NCWRC Mission is to conserve North Carolina's wildlife resources and their habitats and provide programs and opportunities that allow hunters, anglers, boaters, and other outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy wildlife-associated recreation. Description of Work The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is accepting applications for a District 7 Fisheries Biologist (Conservation Biologist II) for the Inland Fisheries Division. The NC Wildlife Resources Commission's Inland Fisheries Division manages, conserves, enhances, and restores the State's freshwater fishes, mollusks, crayfish and supporting aquatic habitats through fisheries research, fisheries management, hatchery operation, and habitat conservation. This District 7 Fisheries Biologist position conducts biological surveys, fisheries research, and habitat enhancement activities; provides technical assistance and informational services to government agencies, universities, and individuals; responds to emergency situations (fish kills); and completes special assignments as directed by regional and Division staff. This District 7 Fisheries Biologist position serves as a liaison between the Commission and the public, private organizations, and other public agencies. Most activities are conducted in the 11 North Carolina counties of Commission District 7. The position provides the day-to-day activities of the District Fisheries Biologist I, and some projects may involve the supervision of one or more conservation technicians or temporary employees. This position is HOME-BASED. The workstation for this position is in the employee's home-based office using an agency-provided computer. The employee in this position is expected to provide home office space compliant with WRC and State policies. This position requires a home-based duty station within the WRC - District 7 area. This is a Monday-Friday position, working 40 hours per week. This position requires frequent travel, including occasional overnight travel. This position also requires occasional travel to the WRC-HQ in Raleigh, NC. Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences - Extensive knowledge of North Carolina's freshwater fisheries, fisheries management principles, and techniques used in sampling aquatic resources and their habitats. - Working knowledge of ecological principles and habitat conservation practices. - The ability to design, conduct, and analyze fisheries surveys; interpret field investigations; and prepare technical reports. - Considerable skills and abilities in operating and maintaining field and laboratory equipment used in fisheries science. - Ability to function independently for work planning, scheduling, procurement, and personnel management.
