Role Description The Director, Field Medical Affairs is a national leadership role responsible for defining and executing the Field Medical strategy for the community segment, aligned to US Medical Affairs and enterprise priorities. This role leads a team of Medical Science Liaisons (MSLs) and is accountable for translating strategy into disciplined execution, measurable outcomes, and sustained scientific impact. This leader demonstrates strong executive presence and leadership credibility, serving as a trusted voice of Field Medical in cross-functional and Medical Affairs leadership forums. The Director ensures medical and scientific priorities are effectively and compliantly integrated into regional and national plans, while influencing senior stakeholders and shaping enterprise decisions. Success in this role requires a balance of strategic thinking and execution rigor, along with the ability to lead through influence, drive alignment across stakeholders, and elevate field medical impact at scale. Key Responsibilities - Lead and develop a national team of MSLs, fostering a high-performance culture grounded in accountability, continuous development, and strong scientific engagement. - Define and execute the Field Medical strategy for the community segment, ensuring alignment to US Medical Affairs priorities and enterprise objectives. - Translate strategy into clear field medical plans, execution frameworks, and measurable outcomes across regions. - Establish and drive KPIs and performance metrics to assess field impact, ensure execution quality, and enable data-driven decision-making. - Ensure consistent, high-quality, and compliant execution of field medical activities across the organization. - Provide ongoing coaching, performance feedback, and leadership development to enhance MSL effectiveness, strategic thinking, and engagement quality. - Represent and lead the Field Medical voice in cross-functional forums, demonstrating executive presence and influencing stakeholders to ensure appropriate and compliant integration of medical priorities into regional and national plans. - Shape cross-functional strategies by incorporating field insights, scientific perspectives, and medical priorities, ensuring alignment with US Medical and enterprise strategy. - Ensure all cross-functional engagement and planning are conducted with strong compliance, scientific integrity, and adherence to Medical Affairs governance standards. - Serve as a strategic liaison across Medical Affairs and cross-functional partners, proactively aligning priorities, removing barriers, and strengthening coordinated execution. - Lead national account planning approaches and field deployment strategies to optimize engagement with key healthcare systems and providers. - Demonstrates resilience, determination, and follow-through in the face of complexity, setbacks, or resistance; maintains focus on strategic priorities; and drives initiatives. - Oversee budget planning and resource allocation, ensuring disciplined investment aligned to strategic priorities. - Represent Field Medical in Medical Affairs leadership discussions, bringing forward field insights and strategic perspectives to influence enterprise decisions. Role Description As part of the Focus Claims Review team at Optum, the Medical Director provides leadership, organization, and direction for the claims review program. They are responsible for the overall quality, effectiveness, and coordination of the medical services provided through Optum. The Medical Director will participate in all aspects of claim review services including provider telephonic discussions and provider appeals. In addition, the Medical Director may also be asked to assist in the direction and oversight in the development and implementation of policies and procedures and clinical criteria for all medical programs and services. The Medical Director will serve as a liaison between Optum, physicians, and other medical service providers in selected situations primarily related to medical claim reviews. This role is part-time work from home and will be 20 hours per week. This can be remote work from home anywhere in the United States. Primary Responsibilities: - Reviews surgical and other professional claims for correct coding using clinical record. - Participation in Training regarding URAC, NCQA, Regulatory Compliance, Confidentiality, Conflict of Interest, HIPAA, and department specific training as applicable. - Discusses cases and clinical coding situations with treating providers telephonically during scheduled hours. - Participates in periodic clinical conferences / calls and in ongoing internal performance consistency reviews. - Composes, if needed, patient situation specific, clinical summaries and rationales for medical necessity decisions. - Is available for occasional, periodic weekend and holiday as needed telephonic and remote computer expedited clinical decisions. - Supports compliance with regulatory agency standards and requirements (e.g., CMS, NCQA, URAC, state / federal and third-party payers). - Ability to travel to scheduled company meetings and activities in the US. - Ability to assist in marketing presentations to clients and ongoing relationship management activities with existing clients if requested to do so. - Provide Clinical support for staff that conduct initial reviews. - Good understanding of professional performance measurement and related possible discussions/interventions with selected providers/groups/organizations. Qualifications - Current, active, and fully unrestricted medical license. - Current board certification in Plastic Surgery. - 5+ years of clinical experience in Plastic Surgery post residency. - Knowledge or proficiency in MS Office (MS Word, Excel, and Power Point). Requirements - Experience in managed care. - Experience with professional claim coding / claim coding reviews. - Experience with integration of clinical and financial data, development of utilization and performance reporting tools, and communication of performance data to physicians and other health care providers. - Knowledge of claim coding resources and techniques. - Proficient computer skills and ability to learn to use clinical and claims software. - Proven excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work over the telephone with other colleagues including physicians, nurses, PTs, OTs and other similar personnel.
