Commerce is looking for a seasoned Senior Software Engineer - Ruby to join our Core Payment Engineering team. This team is responsible for building the systems that handle mission-critical payment processing for merchants around the globe. You’ll work closely with product managers, engineers, and infrastructure teams to build scalable and secure backend services. This role is ideal for someone with a strong engineering foundation, excellent communication skills, and a passion for working on production-grade systems in a high-impact domain like ecommerce payments. The Core Payment Engineering team builds and maintains the foundational systems that power all payment flows on the BigCommerce platform. We focus on reliability, extensibility, and correctness to ensure that merchants can accept payments seamlessly and securely, no matter where they operate or who they sell to. Our work spans payment configuration, authorisation and refund flows, observability, correctness, and performance of critical services. We are trusted custodians of one of the most sensitive and business-critical parts of the platform, directly supporting revenue for merchants and smooth checkout experiences for millions of shoppers around the world. What You’ll Do: - Design, implement, and maintain features in a Ruby on Rails service for the payments offering on the BigCommerce platform - Ensure functionality is production-grade, with the appropriate test coverage on all layers, instrumentation in place, and documentation - Troubleshoot production issues and contribute to post-incident reviews to improve reliability - Produce bullet-proof code that is robust, efficient, and maintainable - Work on challenging problems such as query optimization and performance optimization while adhering to security protocols - Work closely with operations and infrastructure to improve the architecture while building and scaling back-end services - Engage in technical discussion of new solutions and architectures - Participate in code reviews to maintain and improve quality - Mentor other engineers in the current domain - Build beautiful, scalable products using modern tools - Collaborate with our product and design teams to define feature specifications and timelines - Build new features with a focus on testability and extensibility - Engage in technical discussion of new solutions and architectures - Review other engineer’s code to maintain and improve quality and security - Support an open, positive, and energized culture - Encourage innovation and foster an environment of continuous improvement - Ensure that technical decisions support our goals of quality, performance, scalability, reliability, availability, and security Who You Are: - 5+ years of professional backend development experience, with a strong focus on Ruby on Rails - Solid understanding of building and operating production-grade systems (e.g. you know your way around logs, traces, metrics, feature flags, and can debug live traffic issues) - Familiarity with observability tooling (e.g. Prometheus, Grafana, Sentry and Lightstep) - A good understanding of Domain Driven Design - Demonstrated experience integrating with third-party APIs and services, particularly those with nuanced state transitions (like payment flows). - Education: Preferred Minimum Bachelor's degree in CS, EE, SW, CE, MIS; or equivalent experience or completed either a comprehensive software engineering boot camp - Extensive experience with principles of continuous integration and designing, implementing and taking ownership of various tasks across the development cycle - Experienced in developing high-performance, scalable and available web services, and applications - A team player who works closely with stakeholders, pod leaders, and other teams to promote communication and collaboration - Enjoy working on solving challenging problems in a fun, collaborative environment. - Highly proactive and results-oriented with excellent critical thinking and communications skills. - Excited to learn about new technologies - Experience with eCommerce and SaaS platforms is highly preferred Work Where You Thrive For candidates based in the Sydney Metro area, this role follows a hybrid work model, with three days per week in the office to balance focused individual work and meaningful in-person collaboration. • Design and deliver employee-facing communications that keep engineers, product teams, and technical leaders aligned to strategy, connected to culture, and ready for change. • Operationalize and activate communication strategy at the organization level, owning channels, cadences, campaigns, and leader support for the P&E organization. • Build and execute the P&E internal communications strategy and calendar aligned to WD’s product roadmap, operating model, and growth priorities. • Translate corporate and product strategy into clear, employee-ready narratives for technical audiences. • Own communications intake, prioritization, and sequencing for P&E, balancing urgency, impact, and employee capacity to ensure clarity and reduce noise. • Draft and ghostwrite org-wide emails, updates, narratives, Q&As, and presentations for P&E leaders. • Write, edit, and publish high-quality employee-facing content across multiple formats. • Act as editor-in-chief for P&E channels, ensuring message discipline and reduced noise. • Produce, project manage and run the P&E All Hands/Ask Me Anythings, including content, logistics, delivery and follow up. • Lead communications for P&E change (reorgs, mechanism rollouts, operating model shifts).
