The Lead Commercial Lines Underwriter role combines hands-on underwriting of a highly experienced commercial lines underwriter, with enterprise‑level referral authority, strategic influence over underwriting appetite, and leadership in underwriting policy, guideline development, and quality oversight. This individual contributor works directly in support of the Chief Underwriting Officer (CUO) and plays a key role in executing underwriting initiatives, reinforcing underwriting discipline, and advancing strategic priorities across the company. The Lead Underwriter also provides technical mentorship, and ensures alignment with CIC’s underwriting philosophy, and corporate strategy. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. - Underwrite high‑exposure or strategically significant Commercial Lines accounts within highest delegated authority. - Serve as a technical resource to Commercial Lines underwriting staff, ensuring consistent risk selection, pricing adequacy, coverage application, and documentation quality across the book of business. - Partner with Directors and underwriting leadership in shaping Commercial Lines underwriting strategy. - Assist in the training, coaching and informal mentoring of Commercial Lines underwriting staff. - Support CUO‑sponsored initiatives aimed at enhancing operational efficiency, strengthening internal controls, and improving underwriting consistency. - Participate in the development, review, and ongoing maintenance of Commercial Lines underwriting guidelines, authority levels and department policy and procedures. - Lead and manage the quality control program for underwriting staff; performing file reviews to ensure: - Compliance with underwriting guidelines and authority - Appropriate risk evaluation and pricing rationale - Coverage accuracy and documentation completeness - Serve as a primary referral authority for commercial underwriting submissions exceeding standard underwriter authority. - Manage and foster critical third-party relationships with key partners to ensure provided products and services meet or exceed the needs of our customers. - Effective performance of the essential functions of this position requires regular in-person, on-site interaction with colleagues, both for purposes of relationship building and meaningful collaboration - Complete special projects as assigned QUALIFICATIONS - Strong analytical and technical skills with decision‑making abilities, especially on large or complex accounts - Ability to strengthen underwriting performance through leadership, mentorship, and technical expertise. - Ability to work independently or in a collaborative environment with professionals of diverse backgrounds - Professional verbal and written communication skills - Strong interpersonal skills - Ability to positively influence team culture through collaboration, service focus, and continuous improvement. EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE - Bachelor’s Degree preferred - 5+ years of progressive commercial underwriting experience in underwriting property and casualty insurance. - Professional designations such as CPCU is strongly preferred.
