Engineering Lead - Connect

Wise

Company Description Wise is a global technology company, building the best way to move and manage the world’s money. Min fees. Max ease. Full speed. Whether people and businesses are sending money to another country, spending abroad, or making and receiving international payments, Wise is on a mission to make their lives easier and save them money. As part of our team, you will be helping us create an entirely new network for the world's money. For everyone, everywhere. More about our mission and what we offer. Job Description About the role We’re looking for an Engineering Lead to own our Connect domain — the upper networking layer that helps Wise services , customers and partners to communicate safely, reliably, and efficiently. Connect is responsible for key parts of our platform networking offering, including: - Service mesh and L7 traffic management (Envoy-based) - Public and private ingress (including Cloudflare) - Traffic policy, workload identity, request routing, and reliability patterns that enable hundreds of teams to run 1000 services safely at scale Wise runs 500+ microservices in a containerised cloud environment (Kubernetes). Connect provides the paved path for service-to-service and edge connectivity: making it easy for product teams to build and operate services while meeting high standards for resilience, security, and performance. You’ll lead a team of 5–8+ engineers in a fast-moving environment, partnering closely with platform, security, and product engineering to ensure Wise can scale without sacrificing reliability or safety. How we work At Wise, we optimise for autonomy with accountability. Connect sits at the intersection of platform engineering, networking, security, and developer experience. We aim to create strong defaults, self-service tooling, and clear operational ownership — so teams can move quickly without reinventing core connectivity patterns. As an Engineering Lead, you’ll build an environment where engineers feel safe to share ideas, challenge decisions, and grow — while keeping a strong customer focus and operational discipline. What will you be working on? Connectivity Platform Leadership: Own the vision and execution for Wise’s connectivity layer: service mesh, ingress, and traffic management primitives that support platform scale and reliability and security. Service Mesh Architecture & Operations: Evolve our service mesh capabilities (e.g. routing, service identity, traffic policy, observability, resilience patterns). Drive reliable adoption patterns across a large microservice estate. Edge & Ingress (Public and Private): Own and improve our ingress platforms (including Cloudflare), ensuring secure, observable, high-performance access into Wise systems with clear operational controls. Reliability, Performance & Resilience: Build and operate highly reliable L4/L7 proxy infrastructure (Envoy and related components). Improve SLOs, latency, capacity management, and incident prevention. Developer Experience & Enablement: Create paved paths: automation, templates, tooling, and documentation that make the “right way” the easiest way for product teams. Security by Design: Partner with security teams to implement defence-in-depth: network isolation patterns, secure defaults, certificate/identity practices, and platform-level controls that scale. Team Leadership & Coaching: Lead, mentor, and grow a team of engineers. Set clear expectations, enable strong technical decision-making, and develop engineers through feedback and opportunities. Operational Ownership: Own business-critical systems with a pragmatic approach to operations: on-call health, incident response, postmortems, and continuous improvement. Qualifications What do you need? We recognise that people come from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. You don’t need to meet every requirement below to apply. Leadership & Communication: - Experience leading and managing engineering teams (typically 3–8+), including mentoring and performance support - Strong stakeholder management: comfortable influencing priorities across teams and aligning on technical direction - Ability to balance customer outcomes, reliability, and engineering sustainability Proxying, Traffic Management & Networking Foundations: - Experience building and operating software-based L4/L7 proxies (e.g. Envoy, Nginx, Apache) - Knowledge of service-to-service communication concerns: routing, retries/timeouts, load balancing, rate limiting, and observability - Strong troubleshooting skills across systems and networking (Linux command line, logs/metrics/traces) Kubernetes & Microservices at Scale: - Experience operating microservices in a containerised environment, ideally Kubernetes - Familiarity with service mesh architectures (e.g. Istio/Linkerd concepts), including HTTP routing, identity, and traffic management patterns Cloud & Automation: - Broad design and operational experience on public cloud (ideally AWS) - Strong passion for automation: building and testing tooling that reduces operational toil and improves safety and consistency Desirable: - Reading familiarity with Go and/or C++ (writing experience is a plus) - Kubernetes networking experience (services, ingress patterns, DNS, load balancing fundamentals) - Networking protocols and concepts from L3 to L7, including application-level concerns - Backend development experience in Go in a continuous delivery environment Nice to have - eBPF-based packet filtering and tooling experience - Familiarity with transport layer security and certificate management - Experience with Cilium / Network Policies - Exposure to security best practices and standards (e.g. PCI DSS, defence in depth, network isolation) - Interest in international finance, foreign exchange, and payment systems What does success look like? - You’re building and maintaining one of the core foundation layers of Wise’s platform: safe, reliable connectivity at scale - Product teams can ship faster because our ingress and service mesh platforms are dependable, well-documented, and easy to adopt - Reliability improves over time: clearer SLOs, fewer recurring incidents, faster detection and recovery - You’ve onboarded effectively, understand the team and tribe vision, and are driving a roadmap that aligns to Wise’s mission and values - You’re growing a strong team culture: high trust, strong technical standards, and healthy operational ownership Additional Information What you get back - Freedom to define your path to success: you’ll help shape the roadmap and take ownership of outcomes - Flexibility in how and where you work — we’ll do our best to make it work for your needs - A high-impact platform space where your work directly enables hundreds of engineers and improves customer outcomes - The opportunity to lead, mentor, and build systems that operate at global scale For everyone, everywhere. We're people building money without borders — without judgement or prejudice, too. We believe teams are strongest when they are diverse, equitable and inclusive. We're proud to have a truly international team, and we celebrate our differences. Inclusive teams help us live our values and make sure every Wiser feels respected, empowered to contribute towards our mission and able to progress in their careers. Full TimeRemoteTeam 10,001

Role Description As Senior Engineering Manager for Client Multiplatform, you'll lead the engineering team powering the Fanatics Markets app — a fast-moving, high-growth product at the intersection of sports and financial markets. You'll manage mobile engineers, set the technical direction for our Kotlin Multiplatform strategy, and partner across the organization to ship high-quality, customer-facing features consistently across platforms. This role demands a balance of deep technical credibility, strong people leadership, and the ability to influence executives and cross-functional stakeholders alike. The ideal candidate is energized by both platform enablement work and end-user product delivery — this role requires comfort with both. Responsibilities - Lead, coach, and develop staff and senior engineers, fostering a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement. - Own end-to-end technical execution of complex features — from architecture and design to deployment and iteration — including proactive consideration of edge cases, testing, and operational concerns. - Partner with the client platform team to define and evolve shared standards, best practices, and UI libraries across the organization — balancing your product team's priorities with contributions back to the shared platform. - Provide architectural oversight for Kotlin/Java services built with Spring Boot, ensuring engineering best practices are upheld and integration points and dependencies are anticipated early. - Set and track engineering goals around availability, performance, quality, and delivery cadence — holding teams accountable to outcomes. - Recruit, retain, and scale top engineering talent through thoughtful hiring, mentorship, and inclusive team culture. - Lead multi-team planning and design discussions, introducing innovative approaches to technical challenges and driving adoption of best practices across platform boundaries without relying on formal authority. - Advocate for engineering at the executive level, influencing technology strategy and investment in distributed systems and mobile infrastructure — translating complex multiplatform decisions into terms that resonate with product and executive audiences. Qualifications - 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 2+ years managing mobile engineering teams. - Proven track record building highly scalable, consumer-facing Android applications using MVI architecture with deep understanding of unidirectional data flow and state immutability at scale. - Expert-level Kotlin proficiency — coroutines, flows (including Flow vs. SharedFlow distinctions), custom scopes, and thread dispatchers — with the ability to mentor others in its effective use. - Strong experience with reactive programming patterns and asynchronous data processing, including real-time data via WebSockets, gRPC, and Ktor for networking. - Experience designing offline-first data sync layers (e.g., SQLDelight) with an understanding of schema migrations, eventual consistency, and how distributed/async backend state surfaces through MVI to the end user. - Proficiency with Gradle build systems at scale — multi-module projects, convention plugins, remote build caching, dependency substitution, and custom plugin authoring. - Experience designing CI/CD pipelines that validate KMP changes across both Android and iOS builds, including strategies to catch shared module breakages before they reach native builds. - Hands-on experience with Jetpack Compose — including recomposition optimization, stability annotations, and state hoisting — and familiarity with Compose Multiplatform trade-offs. - Deep Android platform expertise — best practices, trends, and end-user considerations — with awareness of iOS conventions sufficient to ensure KMP modules remain idiomatic for both platforms. - Demonstrated ability to lead multi-team programs and scale engineering organizations through high-growth phases, including building cross-team alignment and handling skepticism from platform peers. - Expertise in Agile/Scrum delivery, with a track record of driving process improvements and clear, effective communication across engineering, product, design, and executive audiences. Nice to Have - Production experience with Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP), including shipped features — not just exploration. Familiarity with expect/actual patterns, interface injection, iOS interop, and the organizational challenges of cross-platform adoption. Salary Range $204,250 — $268,750 USD By submitting your application, you agree to our terms of service and acknowledge you have read our Candidate Privacy Policy.
