Job Description

Associate Director, Reporting

829 Studios

Title: Associate Director, Reporting Location: Remote Department: Marketing : Client Services Job Description: The Associate Director, Reporting at 829 leads the function that turns measurement data into the analysis, visualization, and narrative our clients use to make decisions. You'll work directly with client accounts from SMB to Enterprise to translate performance data into insights, compelling stories, and recommendations that drive renewal and growth. This role is responsible for a portfolio of key accounts and builds the reporting systems, templates, and playbooks the rest of the team uses to deliver at quality across the full book. This is a player/coach role anchored in communicating complex analysis in simple and digestible ways. You'll write SQL alongside the team, audit dashboards and reporting models for structural integrity, troubleshoot integrations when they break, and partner with engineering on the warehouse and ETL work that supports custom client reporting. We're hiring an analytics leader with agency experience -- someone who pairs executive-grade narrative with the technical fluency to direct the work, not a manager who delegates everything and not a data engineer without the agency storytelling chops. This role will operate within SaaS reporting tools (Supermetrics, Looker, Sigma) and Apollo, 829's proprietary data consolidation platform. Apollo is owned separately by the Head of Apollo, who you will partner with to achieve both standardized and bespoke reporting objectives. You're Apollo's informed customer and product partner -- shaping its reporting roadmap, surfacing platform requirements driven by real client needs, and coordinating with the platform team on client-specific reporting layers. You must be comfortable operating across the spectrum from boilerplate Looker Studio suites to bespoke Sigma environments and custom reporting frameworks, and raising the storytelling and clarity bar across all of it. You must be comfortable being scrappy, resourceful, and hands-on, operating cross-functionally with Director-level service leads across paid, earned, and owned channels and account management / strategy. Insights you produce will land with senior client stakeholders at VP-and-above altitude. What You'll Do Client Storytelling & Narrative (35%) - Executive Storytelling: Lead the narrative for key QBRs, renewals, pitches, and post-campaign reporting -- the analysis that drives decisions, not just the dashboard. - Reporting-Mode Discipline: Create a systemic approach to matching the reporting mode (boilerplate, semi-custom, fully bespoke) to each client's actual decision needs. - Storytelling Systems & Playbooks: Build the templates, narrative playbooks, and "so-what" review processes that scale storytelling craft across the full book of 400+ clients without diluting quality at key accounts. - Quality Bar: Own the standard for clarity, accuracy, and "so what" across all client reporting; create systems to review and elevate team output before it reaches clients. - Account Partnership: Translate performance data into the implications, recommendations, and decisions that drive renewal and growth. Show up in client-facing forums when senior moments require it. Custom Reporting & Technical Direction (30%) - Reporting Framework Design: Architect bespoke reporting structures for clients whose measurement needs exceed productized options -- custom data structures, tailored visualization environments (Sigma, Tableau, custom), and the analytical logic underneath. Partner with engineering on the technical implementation. - Hands-On Analytics: Write SQL alongside the team; audit dashboards, queries, and reporting models for structural integrity; refactor and raise the technical quality bar across the function. - Integration & ETL Coordination: Coordinate with internal and external engineering on data warehousing and ETL work that supports custom client reporting. Troubleshoot integrations when they break; partner credibly with engineers on architecture decisions affecting the reporting layer. - Apollo Partnership: Be Apollo's informed customer and product partner. Shape its reporting roadmap, surface high-leverage platform requirements based on real client work, and coordinate cross-functional builds with the platform team. Team Leadership & Capability (25%) - Team Management: Directly manage the existing team (Conversion Tracking Specialists, BI Analyst). Coach for craft and ship-rate; develop the bench through process and standards. - Hiring: Bring on additional Analysts and BI Engineers as the function grows. Deliberate hires that raise the bar, not headcount-for-its-own-sake. - Internal Enablement: Run lightweight training, office hours, and clinics that upskill non-analyst teams (account, strategy, media) on data-informed thinking and reporting craft. - AI-Augmented Workflow: Embed AI tools (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, agentic reporting workflows) into the team's daily craft so mechanical analytical work compresses and capacity shifts toward narrative and judgment. Frameworks & Cross-Functional Voice (10%) - Frameworks & Taxonomy: Build and maintain measurement frameworks, naming/taxonomy standards, and QC practices used across the agency. - Cross-Functional Voice: Serve as the data voice in agency conversations on growth, retention, pricing, and capability investment. What You'll Bring - 7+ years of agency analytics, BI, measurement, or applied data experience, with at least 3 years producing reporting and insight directly for senior client stakeholders. - Demonstrated track record of executive-grade storytelling -- translating complex performance data into narratives that drive client decisions. Portfolio, case studies, sample decks, or before/after reporting artifacts expected. - Hands-on technical fluency: SQL (advanced), Python (working). You write SQL alongside the team, audit dashboards and reporting models for structural integrity, troubleshoot broken integrations, and partner credibly with engineers on warehouse and ETL design when client work demands it. - Hands-on across the productized-to-bespoke spectrum -- comfortable shipping templated reporting suites and tailoring custom solutions for specific client measurement realities. Knows when each is the right tool. - Strong cross-functional communication and stakeholder presence. Can land insights with account leads, agency executives, and client stakeholders at VP-and-above altitude. - Working technical fluency across the BI / measurement stack: BigQuery or equivalent warehouse, GA4, GTM, server-side conversion APIs, Looker Studio + Sigma + Tableau or similar. - AI-augmented workflow fluency. Uses Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, or comparable AI tooling as daily workflow to compress mechanical analytical work. - Track record of leading a small specialized team (3-5 people+), including hiring, performance management, and capability building. - Player/coach posture -- comfortable doing the analysis, building the visualization, writing the narrative, AND committing the SQL alongside the team rather than delegating it. - Comfort with ambiguity and lean operations; the function is small today and scales with signal, not pre-built headcount. - Forecasting, Media Mix Modeling (MMM), or Multi-Touch Attribution (MTA) experience a plus. - Production DBT experience a plus -- building and maintaining models, running tests, managing model lineage and dependencies.
